The Brutal Battlefield mission, No 40 in offline.
Mission starts with you immediately being swarmed by drones and then you're swarmed by both kinds of ant.

You'd probably have the mobility to run away as a Wing Diver or Fencer but I can't see what an Air Raider is supposed to do.

You may need to go to a prior mission (or earlier missions on a higher difficulty) and grind more armor/weapons.
Jork Jul 20, 2019 @ 10:35am
sentries for the drones (assuming you have a decent one)

beacons (autocannon, rocket cannon, lapis)

phobos bomber

flamethrower mechs since they have the best mobility for mechs

etc.

air raider definitely has plenty of options but i don't know what difficulty you're playing on so you might not have any of this stuff yet

yes, you said it in your post

mission 40, ants, drones, dropships that spawn more ants, a couple ant queens, and a few normal spiders

i farm that level a lot for armor, it's really not that hard. like i said, if you don't have anything i listed in my post, either change class for mission 40 or farm some new weapons up for air raider.

there's also rangers close to the spawn that you can make follow you for extra drone cover, and 2 fencer squads later on in the level.

If it's the mission I'm thinking of, Grim Reaper team shows up on the side fairly early on. If you can grab them and keep healing them, they will prove a valuable asset.

I did it with phobos bomber, autocannon and 150mm, just run back while bombing everything, the ground enemies focuses on AIs, bomb where AI's are, ground forces dead, bomb the spiders that spawns afterward while still backing away, shoot with the autocannon and 150mm on the drones and anything getting close, autocannon the queens, use mech for spawners, did it on Hard

I just played finished this on hard as air raider.

1# Sentry guns, as Jork said. (I used ZE-SNIPER lv19)
2# Beacons helped me a lot. (A2 Minigun lv38)
3# Heavy Bomber Phobos. (Heavy Bomber Phobos Plan 4 lv43)
4# I used a tank with piercing shells (PT) (Blacker A2D lv40)

In the first few seconds, recruit the AI team. Drop sentries and bombing plan. Then move to the left of your starting point.

Keep backing up, marking enemies with beacons and requesting air support, while you're waiting for your tank.

Grim Reaper team eventually helps you out. Use your tank to grab medkits and shoot the transportation ships.

It's ok to do this mission on normal or easy. Sometimes you just need that one particular weapon.

If I'm not mistaken, these weapons are much higher level than you would have obtained at this point. Chances are the player will not get much beyond level ~30 until after this mission on Hard. Lower level versions of those weapon types may have the same desired effect, however.

Spam phobos
Spam autocannon
Spam 150mm cannon
Deploy mechs

Heavy bomber phobos lv14 + heavy bomber Vesta lv6 + Rocket Cannon B lv7 + Blacker A2 lv17.

OP didn't mention what difficulty he played.

Like other people said, spam air stuff. Move to the left. Wait for vehicle.

All of these weapons are well above what I could have at that point with the exception of the sniper turrets which I don't know why you use as they're legitimately useless.

Anyway got past it by doing an incredibly stupid strategy of having the Howitzer, Concentrated mortar and Phobos 1 and just constantly dropping them on top of myself until I got enough points for a depth crawler II.

Really doesn't feel like that is the intended way the map is meant to be played though, which is what I am talking about. I wager you're not supposed to spend half your time ragdolled by your own airstrikes on any map.

If you insist on playing the Air Raider on your first playthrough, I wager you won't survive the underground mission where you're ambushed from 3 sides. I think the game intends you to switch classes from mission to mission when playing offline.

What number is that?

Though yeah I'll wager there's going to be missions that I have to go back and farm on. Just didn't see this as being one. Mission 40 really seems like it's meant to be played a specific way (ie finding a specific peice of cover) only I can't figure out what was intended...

Part of me thinks it's a bit of the game left over from during development when you were able to call in vehicles at the start of the mission. Similar to that one single mission where you're able to drive the ambient cars around because they were toying with that idea at some point.
That's the beautiful thing about EDF. You can find any number of strategies.
