Use Remote Play Together to play "online"
You can use Steam's new feature - Remote Play Together - to play "online". The host has to have a decent internet but I know I am getting the game soon to play it this way. I can stream to 3 people without big issues so this game is just for us.

For those who dont know - it allows one person with the game to stream it to others. Those others can use their controllers and the game treats them as if they were plugged into the host's PC. With decent internet it works almost perfectly with minor hiccups.

You can only have one shared keyboard/mouse though. Depends on particular games and how they deal with local mutliplayer.

Alternatively, there is a program called Parsec that allows pretty much the same thing. That one is not integrated into Steam though but because of that, it works on literally anything.

Thanks for sharing tips @VojNov! I'm sure players will appreciate it as much as we do :)
You can find more info about Steam Remote Play Together here.

You are recommending Remote Play and saying it works "without big issues", and "almost perfectly", however, you also mention you don't actually have the game. Remote Play compatibility can be game specific, and it seems other players are reporting issues with it....

so, we need a controller that connect to the host pc? I just bought Tools Up and can't even connect to the party through online

The feature works as I say for me and people I play with. Played quite a few games already and it works. You are right that the feature is not for all games. But this game does have it as it says on the store page. I am planning to get the game soon and play it this way.

Without the feature I would not get it because I don´t have people to play it with locally (non gamers).

Depends on the game in particular. If the game supports two people on a keyboard (like Overcooked does) then yes you can have two people on one keyboard.

Here are my observations:

People that connect to the host see host's screen and interact with his hardware - sharing the keyboard/mouse, using multiple controllers as if they were directly plugged into the host's PC. What you can or cannot do with this depends on each game and how it handles local multiplayer/coop.

One thing to note is that there is only one keyboard and mouse. As far as I know, there is no way to have two people on two keyboards (both using WASD for example). Only if you can bind keys to different parts of the same one keyboard. Same goes for mouse.

You can use the keyboard to play games like Worms where people take turns on the same keyboard. Or you can play games like Overcooked where you can have two people on one keyboard.

Remote Play Together is only for games that have the tag on the store page. Most of those with local multiplayer/shared screen do have this tag. There are exceptions, though. For example - Golf With Your Friends while having hot seat mode where people take turns on the same keyboard and mouse does NOT have this feature enabled for some reason. Therefore you cannot use it with that game.

But there is a program called Parsec that allows what Remote Play Together does, but it works for literally every game/program you can think of. So things like emulators can be played "online" using this program and again, it works great as long as the internet connection is stable and upload of the host is decent.

After you invite the first one, try directly from the steam friend list, not from the remote play window - right click the second person you want to invite and there it should say something like "invite to remote play". I dont know the exact phrasing because I dont have Steam set to English.

Does this work?

Kind Regards

I have had the same issue today, strange. With games that worked with even three other players before. Must be some issue on Steam's end.

Just an update - Steam is aware of the issue and works on a fix to be able to invite more than one person again. Saw a Steam member post on official forums.

Just start the game on Steam. Right click the person you want to play with and choose something like "Invite to Remote Play". Then you get a screen where you can choose if the person can or cannot control your keyboard and mouse, or use their controller. Those are the basics.
