Is it better to play with or without a guide?
Ended up checking up one of the spells on the wiki because I wanted to see how it works, and the sheer amount of concepts I couldn't understand on that page was immeasurable.
Should I try to get an ending at least once without any outside guidance? Is that even possible?

Without a guide is better, partly because I don't think there are any good ones. Topics here also tend to contain a lot of spoilers, but feel free to post again with questions if you have any.

It wouldn't hurt to give it a shot, especially if you are a "I'll learn it as I go" kind of person. I think this goes without saying but it will take LOTS of patience, with or without a guide. Also some people have done so before, so it isn't impossible.

I beat it last year before any real guides were out, and the wiki was incomplete and filled with false info. took about 40 hours but it's doable

Without a guide is the way to play it. The guide during your first two or three playthroughs just ruins the whole survival-horror component of the game completely.

I might be the minority but guides are good. The game has a habit of not telling you about important mechanics I beat the entire game without knowing about the Hexens existence I felt so cheated when I found out their were really cool skills that I didn't get to experiment with in my first run. If nothing else look up the Hexens location and look up debuffs in the game if you ever have some debuff you don't understand.

As someone who's still sort of getting into the game, I think I'd suggest that you play without a guide, but that you look up the 'ideal start' for new players. Picking Mercenary and getting a few select skills makes the start of the game waaaaay more player friendly, and none of the skills really destroy any of the challenge or RNG of the later game.

Dash, especially, is basically mandatory, at least for new players. I haven't done the sequel yet but I believe the developer said that Dash was so stupid useful he just made it a base gameplay mechanic, so not getting it at the start of F&H1 just because you're a new player and don't know how is sort of crappy.

I would say run at least your first playthrough without a guide.

without a guide definitively.

If you want to beat the game getting any ending besides "Escape?" I think a guide it's pretty necessary. You don't need to look everything up, but googling where to go or how to get something... Otherwise, It's seems almost imposible to me.

You mean the running skill? I was actually advised in a different point not to take it if I'm playing certain characters because I'll miss out on really good skills

I’d recommend trying to get at least 1 ending without the wiki. The game will give you hints on how to progress if you look around. Just try new things and you will die a lot but that's a learning experience. I did this for both games, and it took super long, but the feeling of overcoming the dungeon by yourself is euphoric.

Seems the answer is really mixed
So is it possible to reach an actual ending (not escape) without a guide? That's what I prefer, and I'll try my hardest to forget what I already read on the wiki

I'd recommend using a guide after you get your first ending, so you know basically what to do next or which ending would you like to see :steamhappy:
