Getting tired of bugs.

Im relatively new to this game and have already encountered 2 bugs which have caused me to lose quite a bit of progress. First one happened when i entered an area and as soon as i got into that area got into a fight with one of those prison guards which led to me being stuck on a white screen. Second bug was right before i was about to save the game. I decided to read all of the books i had found. One of these books was the Book of enlightenment which upon reading froze the game.

Is this a common occurrence or am i just unlucky? Are there any obvious bugs i can avoid in the future?

It is indeed a common occurrence. The game is barely held together and requires mods to function as the developer abandoned the game for a sequel without fixing a lot of very major bugs. The sequel at least doesn't suffer these issues.

Reign of New Gods mod fixes the game very thoroughly, it should seriously just be packaged with the game at this point. Unplayable without it. I do very much wish this wasn't the case but reality is what it is.

I've never used RotNG and I've completed the game so it's definitely playable without it. I do however use Frapollo's bugfix mod. Either way, the game is definitely unstable without something to fix the various bugs and crashes.

Frapollo bugfix keeps the game in it's original state, mostly fixing fatal issues such as crashes. Unfortunately, it seems little information is available on exactly what has been fixed.

I haven't used Reign of the New Gods, but it too claims to fix several bugs, while also adding new content.

I will say the added ability to talk to teamates without menu diving was a huge improvement for them to bring from the second game to 1. Mostly got it for the bug fixes though. It fixed my issue of the screen going black with no way to see at random when walking through zones. Lost so much progress so many times to that crap.
