mahabre? more like mazebre

Hi! I am quite confident in my ability to consistently progress to Mahabre now, and have made it there twice successfully. I might be blind, ignorant or just plain STUPID but how on EARTH do i progress? I did the whole memory scene - as mercenary, killed granny and got kicked out. I have no idea where to go following this. Please help!

Go to past with the shadow people walking around then go down the stairs in the building next to the big fancy locked door, the building on the left. A few super easy enemies later down in the basement there's a not super obvious doorway that leads to 90% of mahabre. Whole hell of a lot of mahabre mostly going out to the left and left and down. Or alternatively, well, the playable characters do share the same souls as the new god souls the figurine requests....

Do you remember talking to the new gods a bit? If you go back around that area in the present, there should be a signpost (literally) describing two very important places...
