You can also find books of enlightment either randomly on bookshelves, there's also a few books that always generate on different floors. You can also spawn them with empty scrolls by typing in O LORD GIVE ENLIGHTMENT
I'm surprised people are having this hard of a time with it.
If there is still demand for easy mode, I might consider it..
The game is literally less than an 3 hours long once you get the hang of everything. The saving system is a lot less unforgiving than people realize. Theres at least two books I've found so far that always spawn in the same place.
I think people are kind of confusing how the game should be played because of the fact it has a turn based combat system. You don't get any XP, your characters don't level up in the traditional sense and combat is very rarely rewarding enough to actually warrant it.
I imagine you are feeling the same way I did when I first started playing the game, because I died within the first 5 minutes of the game and I kept dying, over and over again.
As far as saving goes, I have recommended that players establish a save first with the Crow Mauler bed, because once you have a save, it's easier to play. There's a 50/50 chance of saving (I think the developer said they changed it to one free save) and it's easy to get to, so dying doesn't take up nearly as much of your time if you have to restart.
So people who want to check some story on Hard and are not up for 5, 6 hours of failing coin tosses, such as myself, would truly be grateful for even the regular saving chances of Terror and Starvation mode.
If anyone can help with a mod for saving on the 1.4.1 steam version, I would really appreciate it.
It could be argued that it's atmospheric lore, 'the dungeon is so stressful you can't be sure of getting sleep even while safe'. Except that it becomes obvious that it's a stupid bug when a guard's corpse is teleported into your room at one of the early game beds. Not much 'killing intent' to sense from a dead ♥♥♥♥♥♥. To prove the point, you don't have to deal with the coin flip for the bed in crow mauler's room after he's dead.
Not only that, but post-death crow mauler's bed & the end-game bed at tower of endless are the only two that allow you to sleep 'n' save without coin flipping over literally nothing (although you WILL have to complete the dream sequence & boss first, if you try sleeping in the Past version of tower bed). The bed in the temple district of Ancient City aka Ma'habre might not be bugged either, it could be fine? I haven't tested that location.
Otherwise we get to waste time... & mind & hunger meters... to walk back and forth between screens just to save. Over a genuinely pointless coin flip. Needless to say, do NOT waste your lucky coins on that ♥♥♥♥.
