Tips & Hints (May Contain Spoilers)
I just finished wrapping up the A, B, D & E endings for Fear and Hunger. I've noticed that there's very little content out there right now, anywhere, that helps players out, so I decided to post this here in case some poor soul is looking for some information. I'm not a guide writing kind of guy, but if you are stuck in a specific area, let me know and I'll try and see if I can help.

Saving: There are a few ways to save the game. If you manage to find a rare book on a shelf called "Book of enlightenment", reading it allows you to save anywhere in the game. Further, there will be a few times you'll just find those books on alters. The second way to save is by sleeping in a bed on the 2rd basement floor, the bed is next to a crow statue and when sleeping in it, there's a 50/50 chance you'll encounter a enemy known as the Crow Mauler. Based on a tip in the game, there's also a way to use scrolls and quills to save as well, something along the line of O LORD GIVE ME ENLIGHTENMENT. I forgot to write it down, so I am unsure the exact phrase.

Crow Mauler: The Crow Mauler is a powerful enemy that you can first encounter on the 2nd basement floor and later on down in the mines. The worst part about the Crow Mauler is that it attacks 2 to 3 times per round and has the ability to permanently blind you. The good news is, if you are wearing a iron helm or better, it will prevent crows from pecking your eyes out. Once killed, the Crow Mauler will drop a key, that will allow you to unlock a door in the basement that will give you access to one of the more powerful swords in the game.

Little Girl: The Little Girl is one of the first NPCs you'll encounter when you first start the game. In order to gain access to her, you'll need to either have a key or access to lock picks and the lock picking skill. At first glance she isn't very helpful, until you figure out that she can actually learn any of the spells that you can. Later on, you'll be able to gradually upgrade her equipment, giving her a better chance to survive. SPOILER: The Little Girl is not only the end boss, but is required to stay alive all the way to the end in order to get the best possible ending.

Explosive Vials: You'll need several explosive vials in order to access to hidden areas, create shortcuts, as well as gain access to the hidden Tree later on.

Tips:

When first starting out, it's easier just to take the 50/50 chance with the Crow Mauler and the bed in order to establish a save file. Once you have a save file, the game gets easier.

Pyro Trick has a hit chance of something like 70% and does a reasonable amount of damage, but costs 10 MIND to use. Combustion is just as good as Pyro Trick, but uses NO MIND to cast making it even better.

Every NPC can learn every scroll spell, even if it doesn't show up in their list of spells. NPCs not showing spells learned just means they do what they want in combat (you have no control over their behavior).

There's no EXP or LEVELS in the game, so unless an enemy has something you want, there's not much sense in actually attacking or killing them.

Feed Moonless rotten meat when encountered in order to have them join your party.

The game states that the floors are "randomly generated", but after playing several times, I've come to the conclusion that they are not. Instead each floor has multiple pre-defined layouts and are picked at start of a new game. Play the game enough and you'll start to reconize the floor layouts without having to run through them all.

Most if not all of the enemies in the game have a pattern you can follow. When need be, simply run away. Missing limbs will remain but reset their pattern, making it easier to fight.

Some fights you cannot run from, no matter what.

The player's party ALWAYS gets first attack.

Talking is great LORE WISE, but I still haven't found a good use for it besides that.

Most of the "Gods" in the game, you just kick their ass, but there is one that will ask you to take their child and take them to "The Heart of Darkness". I have yet to refuse them, but I believe somehow this has a impact on the game depending on who is in your party and your repose to her.

WE NEED PURE: After finishing the game on the A ending and then finishing the game again on the B ending, I was given the phrase "WE NEED PURE". I don't know if that's for scrolls or for dialog you have later on with the Gods

do you know how to get past the mannequins and is it necessary to progress the game?

So, with the mannequins, using the depths stone or whatever, you can switch between the city's time line or whatever it is. And you can go back to the current time line to see three of the mannequins, but there's two missing.

If you continue to explore the city, you'll find two other rooms with the other two missing mannequins. The door leads to one of the New Gods.

You may or may not need to do this puzzle in order to progress. You'll need at least three souls in order to be able to continue further in the game and you can find these souls either by killing the other New Gods, or by recruiting other party members. The Little Girl also has a soul, but you'll have to let her die via combat and use a soul stone on her in order to collect it.

Remember the character classes you choose from when you start a new game? Every one of these classes are actually characters that can be encountered in the game and recruited in to your party, each one of them can actually have another soul and when they join your party, you'll have access to that soul even if it doesn't show up in your inventory.

I've only seen one helpful use of talking from a very recent video I've watched from Neco the Sergal (part 13).
If you have Mastery Over Insects and battle the scarab and talk to it ("Wait. We don't have to fight!"). The scarab agrees and says that "We, insects must stick together!" and stops fighting. I'm not sure if it can join your party or not but it didn't for the video cause the guy had a full party already.

So I found a use for talking (well actually several).

In order to recruit Moonless, you'll have to feed her rotten meat. In order to do that, you'll need to use the talk command, but then when it lets you choose a topic, "feed meat" will be one of them.

Also, in the game is a enemy, a beheaded Wizard. I do not believe there is any way to kill it or the anicent demon it summons, but, if you have a eclipse pendant and then talk to them every turn until the end of combat, you'll be rewarded with unique dialog and they will ask you to knlee before them, if you do, you'll be able to add them to your party.

Using talk when encountering one of the new gods will open up unique dialog where they will ask you questions, if you answer them correctly, it deals 500+ damage to them.

There may be more situations like this in the game, but I've played and beat it about a dozen times now and I haven't found any other uses yet.

So is dark priest just the best character to play as? or is there any reason to start as anyone else? Because I really like that the outlander can outrun enemies with dash.

Mercenary can outrun enemies if you choose the right option at character creation. Can also learn Lockpick (or Steal) and Backstab on top of it. They're each really good in their own ways.
Wulfgraar Jan 22, 2019 @ 8:29am
Mercenary is also pretty good if you want to reach the man you were sent to save before he dies, you need to reach floor 7 in less than 30 minutes, you can do that easily if you have 1 explosive vial , the dash from merc creation and lockpicking

Well, that depends..

The Dark Priest has access to Pyro Trick at the beginning of the game depending on your choices and it's easily one of the best early starter spells. It does a lot of damage and has like a 70% hit rate. Combustion is also really good, does even more damage, doesn't use any MIND, but has a slight chance of blowing a limb off in the process.

The Mercenary can outright enemies if you chose the right choices at character creation, as well as lockpick and backstab on top of it, like someone else said.

The Knight can start off with a full set of really good defensive gear that can protect you from having your legs cut off or damaged and also starts off with a pretty good sword on top of it.

While you take that all in to consideration, there are a few things to consider:

1. Dialog and events may change in the game based on who you play as.
2. Anyone of the classes can learn any skill

The second one is really important, since having access to quills and empty scrolls means that you can also have access to almost any skill, ability or item in the game, which means, depending on how lucky you are, will allow you to fill out any of the characters pretty well.

SweetNixPlays Jan 24, 2019 @ 8:31pm
thess are super early tips that took me some time-

Don’t skip the intro
Try things and die
Books of enlightenment are one shot
Take your chances with the save
Once you’ve killed the crow mauler your saves are no longer coin flips
Having trouble with crow bro? What battle items might you have?
You can pick up that stuff on the ground-herbs n mushrooms etc

You need to first increase your affinity with each God in order to be able to earn new skills. You can do that by performing tasks that pleases a god, these can include:

Making love in a circle
Making love in the bunny grove
Sacrificing a life in a circle
Offering your own blood in a circle
Eating Flesh with the Coyote Tribe
Sacrificing Person on Alter on floor 2 of the dungeon
Performing quests for the Cockroach King
Praying at Statues

Also, keep in mind that with prayer, I believe it works only once, so you can't pray multiple times, for multiple gods.

Also, the God of Depths is currently impossible to get full affinity with unless you also start as the Dark Priest. All of the other Gods you can get full affinity with just by performing tasks in the dungeons.

As your affinity grows with a God, when you check a Hex table, you'll see a blue aura extend to and sometimes past those skill spots on the hex table. You won't be able to unlock those spells or skills until the aura reaches a certian point.

Once it does, you'll need to use souls in order to actually unlock them. You earn souls by using empty soul stones to trap the souls of enemies you've killed.

You can also use the scrolls to ask the Gods to teach you skills and spells. But they are not all accessable and some of them won't work properly unless you've earned them properly (Blood Portal is one of them).

Thanks this is exacly what I needed.

How do I open the door on the first floor leading to the Hex table to level up? In my first play I opened it without problems, but right now I am yet in the village after the mines and still didn't find a way to open it.

You need a purification talisman. You either find them, buy them or start with one based on your class and intro choices.
