Is Shield Lass Working Properly?
Just reinstalled and tried out the new shield lass, and she is genuinely useless and I don't think it is just me being rusty. Half the hits I landed simply didn't register (Got a hit sound effect and nothing happened to the opponent) and she was taking hits she absolutely shouldn't be (The sword just phased through the shield to score a hit). I also noticed the guard stance (Holding the button while not attacking) with the shield held out pretty much always seems to fail collision/tracking checks as shots just go right by into the head despite those lines being closed off by the shield.

I'm assuming she is still not properly working, because I can't imagine this is intended. I've used shields in duels before, and they don't behave at all like they do in game (Weapons don't just clip through them).

Seems your installation is somehow buggy. Tried her some time ago with no problems you describe...
UPD: tried her 5 minutes ago. Seems to work just fine still. Got killed when overconfident, though. And one thing you could be rusty at - felt it at the moment myself as she's not my goto character - is a correct assessment of angles when you or the opponent sidestep.
Also, her strikes are not very strong - she's not Isabella or Tarnavsky who can often kill with one strike, so in cases of doubles she will be losing against stronger opponents, this may feel wrong too,,,

I just reinstalled, so I don't think the install would be bugged.

The shield issue isn't a side-step issue, as it happens even without them. Just holding her shield out makes her completely vulnerable to a head cut (Pressed no inputs beyond the high guard stance button to hold the shield out, AI did a basic head cut and it went right through both times). I know holding a high/low guard often seems to stop your auto-guard entirely but that posture shouldn't lose defence tracking and collision (It should honestly improve it at the cost of offence since you are holding the shield out).

It wasn't a case of doubles, I got fairly clean hits and the game recognized the hits via sound effects and even blood on the floor, but they just didn't do any damage at all. Her damage scores are just way too low.

I didn't use high/low with her, but from fighters I feel better, the term 'guard' is somewhat misleading, as those stances are more about counter-attacks than guarding. Maybe this was the reason? Not sure.

RE: damage score - she's quite fast on the other hand, and has her shield which makes her often frustrating to attack in my experience...
Also, to test - you may want to temporarily turn on status bars to see whether the damage registers and to which part. I know it looks bit meh, but may be useful here.

when she extends her left arm, she opens herself up for you to shove her buckler out of the way, which can be followed up with a quick and deadly high attack to the head. i mainly play marie and when maryna shows up that's usually how i defeat her.
Quite possible - but this is one of the methods which are used against shield-users in real life. That it works is correct but bears no relation to the original topic as far as I understand the question.

having played with the shield lady for some time, she seems to be working fine. hold long guard if the opponent's far and you want to maintain distance, release long guard if they're near. something i've noticed with long guard is that it appears to prioritise shield use and completely excludes sword use for defending. when you need to use your sword to parry, release long guard. are you using stable or precise sword collision detection? i use precise and i can defend with the shield and attack with the sword just fine. no problems with hit detection.

I've been testing with both stable and precise. Both work just fine.
