We already have tons of katanas anyway. Sabers are single-edged so to the Japanese they are katanas by definition :). We are getting a dussack which is a 17th century messer later.
Because the styles the characters do are what HEMAists (and the dev Kubold) actually do.
Plus people will be pissy if a kendoka character ends up being the lowest tier character because they have next to do defence against thrusts.

Eh yeah the precursor was around then. But kendo as we know it now was really a 20th century phenomenon I would say. It was quite different in the 18th and 19th centuries. My point stands either way. Samurai are impossible as it is but a kendoka is just really silly.
