I don't get why people keep asking for eight foot polearms in a sword fighting game. Never mind asking for fantasy viking archetypes in the 17th century.
I honestly want to update it in a serious manner:
- a Mongolian warrior fighting with an Ild (plausible)
- a Kazakh warrior (also Ild or Sablia maybe) (also plausible)
- a Tartar from the "Crimean Khanate" (historically more precise than the two above --> also regionally because they marched to Vienna under the Osman flag)
- a German with a Messer (I find that particular weapon very attractive and interesting)
Since there's someone with a two-handed sword, I don't see anything against someone fighting with an axe. Many people fought with common tools back then.
Fancy and army people had sabers, rapiers, etc...not common folk. So I gladly would like to see someone representing those folks.
- a skilled commoner/working man with an axe
Dual wielding is also very viable for some cultures. I don't mean fantasy-like berserkers swinging two two-handed axes around..
But someone cleverly wielding a dagger in his/her off-hand. This could work for three-hit combos like already in the game so far and freshen up the visual variety for grabs.
I'm also thinking about a sidestep attack with a mechanic: "main weapon hits enemy weapon out of the way (implies imbalance to the enemy wielder) where the next attack with the dagger would be a hit if the opponent doesn't press "--> --> (back back)" quickly."
This works very similar as the "push". But with extra variety because it's a sidestep attack.
- someone with a "parrying dagger" in the off-hand.
At first I had a "swordbreaker" in mind because of their interesting mechanic and looks. But it might be too complicated to implement into the game.

Oh well... :P
A few corrections about OP's post: As I understand it, French and Italian rapier styles are actually pretty much one and the same. The French treatises borrowed a lot of material heavily from Italian masters like Capo Ferro and friends (except Thibault who borrowed from Destreza and is Belgian which is kinda French but not really :P ). The current rapierista is French and seems to adopt a very Salvatore Fabris-y stance (which is kinda unusual to be honest. Most rapierists seem to usually favor Capo Ferro... ), so technically both French and Italian rapier styles are already represented. Destreza would be a nice addition, and maybe someone using some sort of Rapier and Dagger fencing would be nice too though.
Anyway, a revised wishlist of what I would like to see added after reading through community comments and much consideration regarding historical-ness and self reflection:
- Destreza Rapier
- Rapier and Dagger (Given the current cast, probably a Capo Ferro-ish or Marozzo-y rendition)
- Scottish Broadsword and Targe (ala Donald McBane or alternatively Rotella and Sidesword ala Marozzo or perhaps some Turkish/Mongol/Tatar saber and shield style with 0% historical sources used as a base but we're tossing this in because of geography! :P )
- A double saber/case of swords fighter (either Marozzo double sideswords, a made up Turkish/Mongol/Tatar/Russian double saber style with 0% historical sources used as a base but we're tossing this in because of geography! :P, or if historical-ness is primary and we're fine with Asian characters, a Niten-Ichi Ryu practitioner)
- Quarterstaff, the polearm that people will hopefully not complain about feeling unbalanced because the Sword Youtubers have indoctrinated into everyone the strange notion that polearms are this undefeatable weapon that a swordsman has 0% chance of ever beating even though that's untrue and I personally feel that their inclusion shouldn't make too big of a deal since all fighting games inherently have a degree of unbalanced-ness necessarily built into them whenever a diverse cast of characters with different movesets are created and the only way to play a perfectly balanced fighting game is to play only mirror matches... :P (P.S. SERIOUSLY AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO WANTS THIS WEAPON IN THE GAME WHEN IT'S SUCH AN IMPORTANT WEAPON IN MANY HEMA CURRICULUMS?!?!? XP )
- Don't know... Maybe a dagger/rondel fighter? Maybe the Chinese changdao practitioner I proposed in my post on Asian characters which is in the correct time period and has lots of historical sources to draw on and is technically possible historically given the fact that two Chinese (Arcadio Huang and Michael Shen Fu-Tsung) visited (and actually stayed) in Europe during this time period and we even have a third who visited and returned to China in the early 18th Century (i.e. Louis Fan) but will probably upset the ONLY EURO WEAPONS GET OUT WEEB crowd... :P
Anyway, with the five and the theoretically hinted at German longswordsman by Kubold on Twitter, I think that would be a good 12 characters that are all pretty unique without feeling too much like an "everyone is just a Ken/Ryu/Echo Fighter thing," but then again I'm just a rando in the peanut gallery that probably has very little actual say in the direction of this game like everyone else here... :P
Look what I've found on Kubold's official YT Channel:

Potential there! Maybe not planned for this game. Or maybe it is?
Might be awkward against sabres though. Poles do have a reach. And are useless very close.
But when the devs manage to get this all done and balanced, I'll take it!!
For another game mode that allows only the same weapon type for the duellists!
I really would love to see a good variety of different weapons though!!
Just make a "long weapons" mode where its just polearm and greatsword characters. And if you want to use a regular sword character, they would have to either have a buckler or a rotella.
Maybe they should just make a separate game for polearm fighting. It just doesn't fit with Hellish Quart. Polearms are the weapons of the battlefield, not personal duels.
