Retrospective
Man what a great game this was/is. I always thought Carmack was so brilliant in the way that all of the classes, roles, weapons, modes and vehicles were so balanced. The level design was so amazing as well. I'll never forget how you could Icarus hop or jump out of the tormentor just right and get the energy cells into the ship one by one. So hilarious. This was truly a game designed by a group of actual professionals and had a full vertical slice before it was ever even released unlike this horrible early access crowd funded tripe thats based off as game development.

Well, John Carmack and id Software only developed the engine and happened to own the IP at the time. It was British studio Splash Damage who designed and developed the game. Rest is of course true. :-)

He was listed as a programmer so im not sure if his input was simply limited to the engine or not. Certainly his contribution would be hard to quantify. Amazing game though and I think Ill send gog.com an email about it.

He was indeed a programmer for the engine and the technologies that the game used but the rest was on SD's shoulders. GOG knows about the game but cannot do anything without convincing Bethesda/Zenimax.

I don't think I understand. As it stands ETQW is par with GOG's quality and DRM-Free policies. Vanilla game works on Windows 10 fine, it doesn't have a copy protection and its license code requirement isn't so much different than some other games on GOG, such as UT2k4, Q3A, RtCW, Neverwinter Nights Diamond (formerly). Yes, it might require few, minor tweaks just like many games on GOG; yes its anti-cheat software is unsupported, just like many multiplayer games on GOG. So, the issue isn't GOG. It's Bethesda/Zenimax's negligence.

What was so amazing about the game was essentially the game mechanic forced people to work together in a natural way to either fufill the objectives or protect against it. The objective based game tied to the roles made it so much more interesting than anything thats currently available right now. The game was truly ahead of its time and I hope to see its return so new people can enjoy it.

Another thing that was absolutely amazing was the fact that it didn't really need any gamer nannies or babysitters either.
