Screen flickering in CS 1.6
I'm having this problem where many horizontal lines moves upwards, like a screen flicker when the game starts up.

Weird enough it happens only on the Steam version and not in the Non-steam version. The flicker is not present when running in Windows mode.

Also I can't get the option for D3D video option in the Steam version, but is present in the non-Steam version.

I wanted to show a recorded video of the output using Loilo Game recorder, but when I do that, the flicker stops while running the game recorder.

That's due to hardware and / or driver issues.

Get the latest drivers.

Additionally, in the console, try disabling VSYNC...

THIS WILL FIX THE ISSUE FOR ALL HALF LIFE GAMES (INCLUDES CS 1.6, CSCZ, CSCZ DC)

If u have used windowed mode in the past - remove any launch options you used to make the game launch in windowed mode.

Then, after you done the below steps, and launched game, go Options > Video and untick Windowed mode.

Then click OK then the game will restart.

Hey there! I had the exact same issue as you, and know the exact fix. I tested and it works 100%.

THE FIX:

Use Compatibility Mode "Windows 7" for Half Life's exe file.

Full instructions:

1. Open Steam
2. Right click on "Half-Life" in your Library
3. Click "Properties"
4. Click the "Local Files" tab
5. Click "Browse Local Files"
6. Find and right click on the "hl.exe" file or the "hl" application. It could look like this[i.imgur.com] OR this[i.imgur.com]
7. Click "Properties"
8. Tick "Run this program in compatibility mode for"
9. Select "Windows 7" in the dropdown
10. Click "OK"
11. Close the window
12. Launch Half-Life

NOTE: This fix will work for all Half Life 1 / GoldSrc games and mods you have installed! As long as they are through steam - if using nonsteam setups perform the same steps on the hl.exe file inside the games folder.

Info:

This issue only happens on some laptops with Intel HD Graphics, and only on some models of Intel HD Graphics cards. I know this as it happened on one of my iGPU laptops but not the other!

This issue started after 2013 when valve made major updates to the GoldSrc / Half Life 1 engine and removed the D3D renderer, and made other modifications. I know this as this issue does not happen on my 2009 copy of CS 1.6.
