[Half-Life games] Increase maximum number of entities
Hi, i'm programmer and also modder for half-life games from Poland.

AMX Mod X community some time ago had created a modification to Half-Life games which supports modding / mapping etc.

Some time ago Half-Life was updated. They fixed problem with sky texture, that's very nice, finally.

When game was created, anybody didn't supposed that this game will be so popular. Gabe Newell and his friends created half-life for today's low-end PC's. I mean, they registered as much memory as needed. They didn't know that someday someone will create mod like AMX Mod X.

These limits nowadays can be increase.

Actualy, game can use maximum 1060 entities, but only 255 are visible.

It's like, when you create new one, other one is dissaperaing.

There's one comment:
'The maximum number of solid entities visible is only about 255-256, this you cannot fix. After the limit, they become invisible.' - You can increase it.


We can change entity the limit by declaring '-num_edicts 2047' but this only affects on server-side, but DLL's in client didn't changing. So, if is possible, you can change maximum number of entities in client-side, or increase it by default to larger number.


As i said - I'm programmer, and i created Tower Defense Mod for Counter Strike 1.6, as many games of this type. Yeah - that's cool but when we have 60 monsters, 120 turrets which are shotting in monsters, addtional items then we are over 255 entities.

When someone create a map, which has trees, some chickens like de_italy, the entities number which can we use is decreasing. Maximum number which can be used is lower by number of entities of map. It's annoying

When entities count on what i'm looking is more than 255, they become invisible - i Can't shot at monster, because all events triggered on that doesn't work. Also - i can't find this entity.

So, Valve, can you Update Half-Life GoldSrc games with availability to have more visible entities, and allowing to precache more models/sprites?

We have now better PC's so this didn't hurt anyone, only helps us. I think its like just change of array size or using vector :)

I don't think they're going to be able to fulfill your request for a few reasons.

You see, the majority of the 1.6 players actually still run the game not very well. I've seen people that run this game at 80 frames maximum and can't even load up CS Source.

Valve don't really update this game that often anymore or even the Gold Source engine which... makes me sad. This game is where it all began and I still enjoy it from the past with friends and such and I would love to see this game become even more active than it currently is.

Also, Valve don't read these forums. You're better off requesting a feature or a pull request on their GitHub, then again, majority can't run this game that well, Valve don't see a reason to update this game that often which makes me sad to be honest, and... there's already an active discussion about increasing the entitiy limits on many things if you're willing to participate. (This discussion has been going on since 2013...)
