Counter-Strike

Counter-Strike

Why is the steam version worse than a non-steam version?
The steam version feels slower and less responsive. I thought buying this game would give me a better experience but i have no incentive to use the steam version when a 100% free version is better in every way.

Why does everyone think the non-steam version is an actual release? It's a cracked software, which technically is free, but that word is synonymous to piracy in this context. Since you have bought Counter Strike, feel free to continue using the cracked software.

If you have your settings correct, the "Steam version" will be snappy and responsive.

I tried what you told me to, i found a bunch of commands on forums and youtube but none of them actually fixed my problem. I guess it's non steam time.

You could (and still can if you find the right people) buy the disk version of the original Counter-Strike and install it onto your PC and it would be legitimate. Disks were common in the 2000s and there were some pretty nifty easter eggs if you happen to have a disk tray with a blank CD/DVD :^)

Even if one would find the files, servers aren't accepting <p48 unless the server is also 'cracked'.

You're also technically right but 99% of the time people are referring to non-steam as the cracked client.

Can you tell me how does it differ so much from the steam version?
FPS? Spray pattern? Movement? UI?

Mouse movement. It has a very noticeable delay and the sensitivity changes based on how quickly im moving the mouse. (if that makes sense) I have no problems with this in a non-steam version or other games. FPS and spray patterns are the same.

This is probably due to this update which, in simple terms, changes the mouse events for raw input, depending on your OS.

But this is probably NOT an issue. I run 1.6 just fine, I don't use raw input (there doesn't seem to be a significant difference from using it at least for me.) and I have no delays. And I play on Linux so there's really no excuse for a mouse delay problem only on the non-Steam version.

The only thing I can tell you is to check your configs and compare them.

On Windows m_rawinput makes a huge difference. I personally couldn't stand it being 0 on Windows (7) since it added a very strange feeling to it. Cracked clients do stuff behind closed curtains, that's what makes the transition very hard since Steam uses launch options to give people a choice but at the same time cracked client includes settings without the user even knowing. Sometimes the config file doesn't even know about it.

Off-topic, what distro are you on katkat@catcomp if you don't mind me asking?

I'm running Arch Linux. Kernel is linux-ck Intel Skylake version.

Windows 7 does indeed have a huge difference in raw input though.

You have better fps in cs non steam because you have no security for example VAC. And non steam you can feel a difference when you shoot because steam version is 100% clean and non steam has a little things add. Of course the people who made de non steam versions made it "better" than steam version to people download it and not buying it on steam.

This is false.

VAC does not affect FPS at all since it's not hardware or kernel based.

I didnt said that vac was the only cause that make worse fps.
There is a lot of things.

Steam in essence is actually DRM.

The game files are owned by Valve.

When you purchase a game on Steam, you obtain a license.

Downloading the game from torrented or otherwise 'borrowed' websites; is piracy.

The Steam version of CS 1.6 is perfectly fine without performance issues.

If you disable VSYNC and some other key settings, all should be well.

Pirated versions of the game have these settings already configured in SOME cases.

That is why, the 'uneducated' or rather ignorant will say it is better.
