So in EA's lexicon "forever" means just a year.

They had a chance to try for a reboot and instead came up with Ultima For-A-Year.

EA isn't a publisher for creativity, it is where franchises go to die a lingering death.

Ultima Forever and the Ultima Online client (which apparently got the green light) are not the same thing. So I am not sure how this is relevant.

Pretty sure Ultima Forever was that cheap mobile game they made, which was a cash grab just short of as offensive as Dungeon Keeper was.

Still looks pretty dead to me. Might there be confusion with the freeshard of similar name?

Nope, Atlantic Server is alive and well.

Now it appears that you're mistaking the iOS game Ultima Forever for Ultima Online.
Othello pointed this difference out already.

To update on what КУБОC said, Shroud of the Avatar seems to sadly have had features/development delayed so that Lord ♥♥♥♥ and Starr Child can go whale hunting in a perhaps more bonkers form of Star Citizen's model.

Seems like SotA is aiming to capture the "UO Experience" down to the modern ghost towns:
http://steamcharts.com/app/326160#All

Tomorrow is when their virtual real-estate market racket is going to be opened up even more than charging people eBay prices for what was originally a basic game feature.

If only they had spent more time working on the actual design of the game than creative crowdfrauding. And yes, crowdfrauding, given the bait and switch the Kickstarter contract represents.

Portalarium are basically aiming for all of the whales, current and previous, and expect to sell cosmetic (and some not-so-cosmetic) macrotransactions on what looks to be a licensing of the Ultima IX engine.

In short, Tabula Rasa all over again, but this time they have nobody else to blame but themselves for adopting models (including graphics) about ten years older than they should have used.
