It was a preview, not a major landmark video or announcement. It was the last thing I did before pausing this project. I hired new voice talent, finished my procedural planet renderer, slapped together a video and then started Fringes of the Empire (see Greenlight page). I'll come back to this project one day, but I'm not sure when.

Not to throw fuel on any fire here, but what the heck was that 1st video?? Had me interested at first, but then it degrades into a 4 minute music video?! If you're going to use a video like this to highlight a game feature or mechanic, you should consider how you're framing it so that when you present it to us we'll know what we're looking at.

You're right, it's not an "official trailer", and it is labeled as such. However I did not upload that video it's a copy of another video on YouTube with another title that includes the word 'Preview' that someone not on the team put on GameSpot as the Official Trailer.

The colors picked on starships are up to the players. I don't pick them, there is a palette to choose from. The planets are generated at random. The HUD uses icons, and it also uses a standard color scheme which one day may be configurable. I just feel like you are looking at a lower resolution screenshot and not seeing the actual game which, as I've disclaimed before, shouldn't be judged on its screen shots.

What I tried to say is, visually your game could be improved, if you took either the time to investigate on how to use colors and contrast efficiently, or if you got help from a person with knowledge in "color theory".
I wouldn't assume that experimenting with visual styles is high on your priority list, though. There are probably features more deserving of your attention and time.
Watching the videos felt straining to my eyes, though, which I attribute to your random use of colors.

I'm at a loss. You want me to avoid sci-fi fonts in a science fiction game? What's a "pure color"? You say there are too many 'quarreling colors', yet you want me to add more tones? I'm having some trouble understanding exactly what it is you are trying to suggest.

I assume that somewhere in this eye-twistingly blurry mess of quarreling colors, geriatric lights, misanthropic fonts and shapes that are desperately searching for a meaning to their existence, is hidden a game.

My recommendation would be some time spent on studying composition, regarding color theory and contrast.
You need to apply either less saturation, more neutral colors or better yet both, to the menus and objects. Try to avoid too many pure colors, add more tones. If you cannot avoid sci-fi fonts, at least try to compensate for people with weak eyesight. Work contrast into your building feature, regarding fore- and background. Use shapes that are intuitively recognizable.

Or better yet, get an artist with a full grasp of all these concepts!

Great! Yeah the Demo has a certain set of features and the videos may be made with something other than the demo. It's still being worked on. But that's good news for us because we now know your machine works with the demo! Thanks

I did build a base, but could not exit my ship like done in the video. I had a ship i built myself thos so might be that i forgot to add something to it to be able to land it or exit it. Will have a look at the readme, Thanks for giving me a few pointers. :)

I believe the file README.TXT included may help you with the alpha. You use WASD or ARROWS, the mouse (both left, right, wheel) and there are only a few keyboard commands: SPACE, ENTER, H (hyperspace). To travel to a new star system, for example, click the BLUE STARMAP ICON, then locate a star, click it, then click it a second time and you will hear a "beep" as the map exits. You may now hit "H" to travel. There are also 2 videos posted here that demonstrate the building system. Find them on YouTube with "Building Empire in the Sky"

Either the game is hard to play or i am incredibly stupid. Stil holding my vote until i either get to test it propperly or i give up trying. I dont understand how to do anything, and i cant find any documentation as to how to do things either.

@TheMilkman This game has its roots in Starflight, Star Control and Master of Orion. Your suggestions are noted. Currently you control the weapon type by setting the color of the weapon, and the readout on the weapon editor shows you what type of radiation / temperature. Other controls in the weapon editor already allow for homing, spread, bullet speed, firing rate, etc, depending on the type of weapon (beam, bullet, blaster, bomb/missile). Weapons tending toward the green end of the spectrum have more radiation, blue weapons are colder and red weapons are hotter. Radiation weapons cause radiation damage, which hurts your crew and disrupts your engines. Many of your suggestions are already partially or fully implemented and can be experimented with in the editors of the Alpha Demo.

Hey merv, i was checking this out again and i got the funny feeling that this feels reminiscent to that old school space game Master of Orion. Ill throw my suggestion at ya, i think it would be cool if, instead of having weapon A fires the same all the time no matter what (like most games) you should be able to customize the effect of said weapon via layers. For example a photon cannon (or something) the first layer could be the way the shot comes out of the barrel (in 3s like a shotgun blast, like a machine gun, one giant bullet, etc) then you could add on top of that layers for different condition effects (poisons, like something that siphons air from your ship, fire attacks, etc.) and another possibility would be different ways to tweak the shot like the speed of the bullet, if it homes, if it is a shot that explodes on proximity etc. Would really add another good layer of customization i think.

I hear ya Dharma. When I started this project in 2007, there weren't any other games like it, not even Terraria. However, I am focusing on a real gaming experience beyond just the space part, so I hope to serve up something that is genuinely fun on multiple levels. It's sandbox, but it has level progression, plot, and other things that sandbox games haven't shown much of yet. I don't want to go into the details but I promise it to be a fun experience. Right now I'm trying to get the ships looking better because of feedback from the commenters here, and then I will return to the other aspects.
