Blockade Runner (new engine being debugged!)
< >
robothawk Jul 20 @ 12:50am
I'm in the same boat as Critical Failure, I bought this with my friend back in either 2010 or 2011, I hope I can find my proof of purchase somewhere, I don't even have that credit card company anymore. I hope you guys go live.
Critical Failure Feb 11 @ 2:50pm
I bought into this game back in ... 2010? Been a while. Still hoping it comes out. Best of luck guys! (Hope I get a game key for my 10 bucks even though it was almost a decade ago. if not no worries.)
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] May 1, 2015 @ 8:53am

We've condensed the primary updates to be coming from the main website, forums, and twitter. We're still building a new engine for the game and are a long ways away from releasing on Steam, so updating the Greenlight page took less priority.

That said, I keep forgetting how many people still stop by here and will get the page updated to redirect everyone to where the news can be found!

Schema worked hard and did a good job with Star-made. If you're someone who's into space voxel games and haven't heard of it, you should definitely check it out! ^.^

Yeah doing a 6,000 e-mail update might be warranted at this point... but I tell ya, you need to work twice as hard to bring down hype! I almost have to repeat three times: "Engine being built; there is no big release, engine is being built; there is no big release, engine is being built there is no big release". ;D
Capt Charles C Payne Apr 30, 2015 @ 2:26pm
Why is last update jan 2014
Uzixia Mar 2, 2015 @ 9:55am
Starmade (free indie type game) meets ACTUALLY GOOD :D:D:D CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
Hazardrar Feb 26, 2015 @ 9:02am
No, I haven't checked the forums or the founder's club, because I purchased the game 2014-03-25 and therefore can't access the founder's club.
It's no problem to not generate hype and don't do any marketing, but you should at least send updates via email to your buyers sometimes.
I already totally forgot about Blockade Runner until I did a research for space-sandbox-games.
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Feb 26, 2015 @ 8:06am
@Hazardar Have you checked out the Founder's Club? We've got new standalone mechanics tests made in Unity, as well as portions of the new engine available for testing!

For the most part we've been trying to keep news on progress low-key so as not to generate hype. We were swept up in the 2011 era of "Anyone can Early Access™!" and since 2013 have been trying to keep the focus on the actual growth of the game's mechanics and custom game engine rather than any form of marketing. =\
Hazardrar Feb 25, 2015 @ 12:55pm
Bought the game on their website almost one year ago. Still only got the August 10th 2012 version which doesn't work. Totally worth the $10 /sarcasm
Xes Reltih Feb 7, 2015 @ 8:32pm
Still hope :)
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Dec 15, 2014 @ 4:23pm
@DsC.sashusilver Yeah, we set out to make sure Blockade Runner runs good and plays even if it took the extra time to do it right. =]
DsC.sashusilver Dec 14, 2014 @ 5:15am
Thanks for the Info. Ok take your time, i think this is one of the most interessting games in near future. It seems much much smoother than the other minecraft-style games.
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Dec 12, 2014 @ 7:02pm

We've been making progress on the new engine, but have had half the team (mostly us "meaningless" artists... >.> ) collecting on some lucrative contract work to fund development through the next year.

You can find out more on the development Nathan and Zack have been making on the new engine and test out Micah's gameplay standalones by following the instructions here:
DsC.sashusilver Dec 12, 2014 @ 11:20am
Are there any news from this awesome game?
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Sep 11, 2014 @ 7:29am
@HEDHNTR We've been working on the 'primitive' pipelines (things like 2D, UI, Menus, etc) for the past eight months or so, and would like to focus on performance, multiplayer and modding capabilities with the engine for the remainder of the year.

While the engine is still being built we're having the artists work on Unity standalones to experiment with actual gameplay, that way we've got *something* to play while all the engineering bits get done. =]
SGT.FreemⒶn Sep 11, 2014 @ 4:53am
how long will that take?
SGT.FreemⒶn Sep 8, 2014 @ 9:43pm
@[ZanMgt]Aaron o.also ur name is my real name!
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Sep 8, 2014 @ 1:51pm
@HEDNTR Not until after the new engine is completed. =]
SGT.FreemⒶn Sep 8, 2014 @ 4:03am
when will this be on steam!? it needs to be!
Loki Sep 1, 2014 @ 11:46am
I did enjoy playing the Alphas
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Sep 1, 2014 @ 10:02am
@epicguy4444 A different kind of game. We learned a lot on what we did and did not want the game to do with our XNA demos back in 2011-2012. =]
Loki Aug 29, 2014 @ 1:41pm
Space Engineers beat them to it but i would still like to see what this game is like when it delivers
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Jul 25, 2014 @ 7:06am
@(UMB) We're still working on the new SharpDX engine, so there's no new public demo available yet. You can check out the old XNA demo from 2012 if you like from the game's download page, but it's kind of a pain to get to work and is definitely out of date!
Arkion Jul 24, 2014 @ 7:03pm
Is there a demo, or is it out yet?
Karl Krafft Jul 20, 2014 @ 11:56am
i see alot going in the game i like it i have only seen vodeos though it looks like it has alot of stuff coming good job to the creators

@talondrake02 While we appreciate your plug, we have to advise folks to take a "wait and see" approach considering the game is still being prototyped! Do your research first and download the available 2011 / 2012 XNA Prototypes or watch some of the old let's plays before financially supporting Blockade Runner's development.

Until the new engine is ready to go we'll just graciously accept y'alls patient observation. ^^
Adolf A. Axolotl May 13, 2014 @ 10:04pm
i recomend all to support this game although it may take a while to release. Ive played the game and it is incredbly addictive and fun
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Apr 17, 2014 @ 1:08pm
@Chris23399 We're all pursuing our own visions for the genre. =]

We're just a little bit behind considering we're still building our engine from scratch, whereas both Star-Made and Space Engineers were using their previously developed engines.

Personally I believe there's room for everyone in the end as long as everyone's attempting to innovate. ^^
The two time Apr 13, 2014 @ 8:03am
starmade is way better. but i go for space engineers
Xes Reltih Mar 16, 2014 @ 7:04pm
+1 Supported this game
dracorotor Mar 2, 2014 @ 7:39pm
Zothen's just trolling.

This game had promise in w28, and those of us on board this whole time have seen that as a proof of concept of the game to come, with full knowledge that those early builds were just a taste of a future game.

ZanMgt have done nothing to make us think our money was ill-spent. When they release, I'm confident that BR will be great, and a huge time sink for a lot of us.
Niwantaw Mar 1, 2014 @ 6:34pm
@Zothen I'd argue that I'd much rather see someone willing to go back and redo something that isn't perfect than opt for a "eh that'll do"

There's a reason they aren't planning on putting it up for sale on steam for a little while. Probably something to do with the "ALPHA GODDAMNIT" sticker.
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Mar 1, 2014 @ 6:10pm
@Zothen We don't want to misrepresent what we're putting together here, so with the benefit of hindsight into our amateurish beginnings, do you have any suggestions on how we could better represent our work going forward?
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Mar 1, 2014 @ 5:57pm
@Zothen Schema of Star-Made also had over 4 years to build his engine before going live with it in 2012. =P

The truth is we did jump the gun back when we launched Blockade Runner in 2011, and after W28 without having any real clue that it takes *years* to build an engine from scratch (This EA dev basically nails it: here []) we decided to try and go beyond normal voxels with our own engine.

Nearly 2 1/2 years later and a year spent re-factoring the game for SharpDX and we're still committed to seeing this thing properly through. Everyone who had purchased before January 1st 2014 are included into a Founder's Club where they currently have access to our regular builds and can provide feedback and direction on the re-build of the engine,

We will not be selling this on Steam until the Founder's deem its ready, and non-supporter demo is available for free.
Zothen Mar 1, 2014 @ 5:18am
I can only recommend to stay away from this Junk-Project! Unfortuntly the team lacks the skills to pull this off and is incapable to get a proper project planning done. This is merely a hobby project thats financed by people who are deceived to put trust in this.

This project is way over their head! Just follow their updates and see how often they have to redo their stuff because of lack of skill and bad planning.

In relation Starmade was coded by just a single person. Make your own opinion.
dracorotor Feb 26, 2014 @ 6:49pm
In your own time Aaron, and congrats on the greenlight.
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Feb 25, 2014 @ 2:15pm
@Walmart Mhm, for folks who bought the game in the past we'll be providing you a Steam key for free. We're working Steam integration into our schedule, and as soon as we can provide testing we'll probably have Beta (to the Early Access? O.o) available for Founders.

Ain't going up completely though till we all agree it's lookin' sharp. ;D
WallMart Feb 25, 2014 @ 1:50pm
congratulations on getting greenlight! hoping to see it some time (the earlier the better :P) on steam.

any chance by the way to get a key if you already bought the game before?
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Feb 21, 2014 @ 2:30pm
Thanks for the feedback! Since we're going to be put such an effort towards quality assurance and modability in the next few months, we want to keep the game features (ship systens, oxygen, etc) a little less of a headline until they're directly on the way.

@Codus Plex
Break all the things. =P
Ghastly zw98 Feb 21, 2014 @ 1:27pm
I like the new description. It helps convey this isn't Starmade or just another voxel game. I feel when more features are put out (ships systems, multiplayer... etc.) it will really show it's own identity.

btw, I am already in the founder's club. Can't remember if I am listed as zw98 hapyzach29 (either one is fine).
Codus Plex Feb 21, 2014 @ 1:26pm
@[ZanMgt]Aaron Description looks good! Glad to be part of the Founders Club! Going to be moving at the end of the week but shouldn't be disconnected from the interwebs for to long. Let's break (so we can subsequently fix) us a game!
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Feb 21, 2014 @ 9:34am
Updated the game's description since the old stuff was pretty out of date. Lemme know whatcha think and I'll make adjustments! ;P
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Feb 21, 2014 @ 8:20am
@Sypher Added to the Founder's club, begin the debuggering! ;D
Codus Plex Feb 20, 2014 @ 8:53pm
@[ZanMgt]Aaron PM sent, ready to debug! :P
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Feb 20, 2014 @ 7:19pm
@zw98 @Sypher Thanks guys! If either of you were supporters before January 1st 2014 you're welcome to join the Founder's Club on the Blockade Runner forums to help us debug the new build! Right now we're on to the main menu after debugging the 2D pipeline, 3D pipeline and basic UI. Up soon here is the test of the new voxel pipeline and on to multiplayer! ^^
Ghastly zw98 Feb 20, 2014 @ 2:43pm
hapyzach29 here, good to see this here! Congrats!
Codus Plex Feb 20, 2014 @ 10:38am
WOOOOOOOO! I've owned the game for a while now, still waiting on that rebuild.....:P but seriously I know you guys are working hard with a new engine and I'm totally stoked to see this come to fruition. Also really happy to see you guys got the Green Light! Keep up the awesome work! I'll be waiting...... ^.^
[ZanMgt]Aaron  [author] Feb 20, 2014 @ 8:24am
Hah, bizzare that the greenlit bit happened now while we're still in the middle of the re-build! Thank you everyone for your votes though, it's gonna really help to have the Steam portion worked out now instead of later. ^^
Codus Plex Feb 14, 2014 @ 12:30am
Yes, yes and hell yes! Glad to see you guys trying to get on Steam! Already bought the game on your site but I hope you can make it to this awesome distribution platform and reach the masses!
