This guide is to help people install mods to left 4 dead 1 & 2. It's a very simple step by step guide, and should help many people who are confused with installing mods for these two games.

Installing Mods Manually
Note: Make sure you have enough space on your hard drive for these mods. Mods that I have downloaded have ranged from 1mb to 1.5gb.

Step 1: Log in to whatever site you're using (For this tutorial, I'll be using l4dmaps.com),

Step 2: Download your mod(s) (maps, skins, weapon mods, etc.)
{If what you downloaded was NOT a .vpk file or was not a .zip/.rar file containing a .vpk file when extracted, then go back and download the correct file},

Step 3: Locate your steam folder: Program Files/Program Files (x86) -> Steam,

Step 4: Now locate your game folder: Steam -> SteamApps -> Common -> left 4 dead 2,

Step 5: Locate the folder called "addons": left 4 dead 2 -> left4dead2 -> addons,

Step 6: Copy and paste the .vpk files in there,

Step 7: Start your game,

Step 8: Go to the addons folder, and it should have the name of your addon located in there.

Run the game, go to extras -> add-ons, and your mod(s) should be listed there as well.

You should now be able to use your mods. :)
With Steam Workshop
Note: This method only works with Left 4 Dead 2.

Step 1: Go to your library, and click "All Games" on the top, and then click "Tools",

Step 2: Install "Left 4 Dead 2 Authoring Tools",

Step 3: Using the first view (top right, click first one), locate "Left 4 Dead 2" and click on it,

Step 4: Click "Browse the Workshop",

Step 5: Find the mod you want,

Step 6: Click "+ Subscribe",

Step 7: Go to the addons folder, and your addon will be there.

Run the game, go to extras -> add-ons, and your mod(s) should be listed there as well.

To be clear to everyone browsing this guide still, look at that screenshot of my folder... Windows 7. This was uploaded in 2013. That's how old this guide is.

I don't actively play this game anymore, so I have no idea if this method even works anymore. If the workshop is basically the same as it was back then, just click subscribe, and you probably have to go into the game -> extras -> activate the levels that way. Also, in some modes like single player, custom content will most likely not work. You have to join a game, or create your own multiplayer game.

server is enforcing consistency for this file error- you can only run the mod in single player or locally hosted game

load mod into steam workshop folder- but gets gets deleted after launching game-install in addon folder, not workshop folder

Try locating the mod(s) in the steam workshop.

help!
Everytime I put in a mod (Example: ellis hunter.vpk) into the addon's folder, I start up the game. It doesn't show the mods I just installed, and then when I go back to check on the addon I just placed to see if it installed correctly, its gone!
please help!

To uninstall mods, either remove the addon from the addons folder that you placed in there... or go back to where you clicked the subscribe button and unsubscribe.
