* The 58th year of Shouwa, early summer
It's June, and the summer heat has arrived earlier than it does most years.
By day there are crickets, and by night there are cicadas.

We're in Hinamizawa, a small village in the countryside.
There are fewer than two thousand people here. But every year, there is an event.

This event is a mysterious death.
(The series has run from 1979 to 1983)

On a certain day in June, someone dies, and someone else goes missing.
The series of deaths is connected to the upheaval surrounding the dam construction project.
A murder case that was covered up is being reenacted.
Is it a conspiracy? A coincidence? Or perhaps a curse?

Someone who was supposed to be there isn't.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there is.

Someone who was alive last night is dead now.
And someone who is here right now isn't alive.

So, there is no way to avert tragedy. There is no choice but to give up.
But don't give up.

Only you can stand up to this.

* Higurashi When They Cry is a sound novel.

The music, backgrounds and characters work together to create a world that is the stage of a novel for the user to read. They laugh and cry and get angry. The user takes the point of view of the protagonist to experience the story.

An important point to note here is the absence of what is commonly called choices and forks. This means that you are freed from the tedious saving and loading, the searching for events and routes, and can instead enjoy the story from the beginning to the end.

Nevertheless, this is a game, not a novel.
As the player, you will be able to unravel the mystery surrounding the events in the game as the scenarios unfold.

You can ponder on the nature of the mystery by yourself when you're on the train, you can discuss it with your friends, you can search for clues on the Internet or you can even file complaints on the circle's website. The choice is yours.

This is Higurashi When They Cry, a serial murder themed sound novel that doesn't offer you any choices, but does offer you the opportunity to search for the truth yourself. Will you fear? Will you become engrossed? Will you face the challenge? Only you can decide how to enjoy the story.

The voice acting for the ps2 version was done by Alchemist, an entirely separate company to Mangagamer. Mangagamer doesn't have rights to Alchemist's stuff, so it's not being put into the game. I would say it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to find a voice patch, due to the amount of effort required to port the ps2 voice acting over to the PC version (as it would have to be done by fans) but I know that the fan group "When They Translate" managed to do the first arc, so there's still a possibility that someone could do the rest.

It seems like this version won't have voice actors.... anyone knows, if we'll be able to download a voice patch after steam released the game? I think the ps2 version had voices, but I'm not so sure...

For those of you who have not noticed it yet there is in fact a store page (though you can't actually buy the game yet it's good to know it exists) here is a link:

MangaGamer said, they wanted to release higurashi in 2014, so I guess it'll be released in december or january.

@Magusverborum, I hope they will announce a release date at the AniMaine convention which will be held on November 21st, it seems MangaGamer has a panel there.

I must admit, when they said they'd be hoping to releasing the first chapter before the end of the year, I didn't think that they were actually going to release around the end of the year... it's been over a year since this was greenlit, I understand they're doing the engine port and art and such, but I really wish they would give us something other than a few previews of character art. A trailer maybe? I dunno, I'm also hungover right now, I want my Higurashi fix already I've been waiting so damn long.
