* The 58th year of Shouwa, early summer
It's June, and the summer heat has arrived earlier than it does most years.
By day there are crickets, and by night there are cicadas.

We're in Hinamizawa, a small village in the countryside.
There are fewer than two thousand people here. But every year, there is an event.

This event is a mysterious death.
(The series has run from 1979 to 1983)

On a certain day in June, someone dies, and someone else goes missing.
The series of deaths is connected to the upheaval surrounding the dam construction project.
A murder case that was covered up is being reenacted.
Is it a conspiracy? A coincidence? Or perhaps a curse?

Someone who was supposed to be there isn't.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there is.

Someone who was alive last night is dead now.
And someone who is here right now isn't alive.

So, there is no way to avert tragedy. There is no choice but to give up.
But don't give up.

Only you can stand up to this.

* Higurashi When They Cry is a sound novel.

The music, backgrounds and characters work together to create a world that is the stage of a novel for the user to read. They laugh and cry and get angry. The user takes the point of view of the protagonist to experience the story.

An important point to note here is the absence of what is commonly called choices and forks. This means that you are freed from the tedious saving and loading, the searching for events and routes, and can instead enjoy the story from the beginning to the end.

Nevertheless, this is a game, not a novel.
As the player, you will be able to unravel the mystery surrounding the events in the game as the scenarios unfold.

You can ponder on the nature of the mystery by yourself when you're on the train, you can discuss it with your friends, you can search for clues on the Internet or you can even file complaints on the circle's website. The choice is yours.

This is Higurashi When They Cry, a serial murder themed sound novel that doesn't offer you any choices, but does offer you the opportunity to search for the truth yourself. Will you fear? Will you become engrossed? Will you face the challenge? Only you can decide how to enjoy the story.

@DJ Szatan ,
This release won't get voice acting. The PC never had voice acting and licensing the art and/or voices from the company which produced the PS2 version of Higurashi was too expensive.

@Nitori the Kappa of Death,
They are currently working on the visual novel. The first arc has been re-translated and they are now porting it to Unity. I also wouldn't worry about the sprites being a turnoff anymore. MangaGamer has commissioned new sprites for the Steam release. You can find some examples in the "Updates Sprites Announced" thread.

Please, for the love all that you people hold holy, release this game on Steam! It is well worth your time, and, for those of you who the graphics are a turn off, you can find an update for them online easy enough if you wanted to update them. Just please, give the game a chance and put it up for sale
