Pioneer Survival Guide - Eden Star v0.2.4
By Kittiedragon and 3 collaborators
Thank you for viewing this guide. As Eden Star is in Early Access, this guide will serve as the tutorial as it is much easier for us to update it as we progress. I hope you find this guide useful and that it helps you make the transition from survival to domination.

If you come across anything that the guide doesn't cover or you find something needs explained more, please do not hesitate to get in touch either by commenting on this guide or letting us know in the forums.

When I refer to controls it will be the default key assignments (shown at the bottom of this guide) but they can be reassigned to whatever you prefer in the Options menu.

Starting the game

When you click new game you will be presented with a host of options for the game. Here you can adjust many options such as day/night cycle length and ratio, harvest yield, mining speed, toggle free build mode and AI spawning.

We recommend leaving these settings at default for your first playthrough so that you can experience the game in the state it is intended to be played and can later experiment. These settings can be modified from the pause menu within the game so you can change them later if you wish.

Introduction

You wake up dazed, a Scout Bot finds you amongst the far-flung wreckage of your crashed dropship. You must repair your armour, follow the on-screen instructions to open the inventory (I) and repair your suit.

After doing so you will stand up and be able to move around. In single player, you now start with full Paladin Armour. Other armour can be crafted in the Armoury Utility.

To move use 'W', 'A', 'S' and 'D' keys, press 'Shift' to toggle Sprint and 'C' to toggle Crouch.

Understanding the Heads-Up Display

Your survival statistics are shown at the bottom left of the HUD and will be affected by things you do in the world

Oxygen

Depletes underwater and when your suit is breached, reducing the efficiency it can extract oxygen from the air.

Infection

Increases with consuming unprocessed food or drinking unprocessed water. High levels of Infection will have an impact on other stats. You can craft treatments for infection in the Medical Station Utility.

Hydration and sustenance

Deplete over time, consume food and water to increase these values. Use the fabricator to process food and water items to reduce the infection risk from consumption.

Stamina
Will decrease while sprinting.

Health
Depletes as a result of receiving damage. The default Paladin armour has damage resistance and will reduce the amount of damage you receive. Some Armour types (not the Paladin set you receive at the start) can provide an additional shield bar that prevents damage.

Top left shows the current day/night countdown

Top centre shows your compass.

Bottom centre shows your currently selected weapon, highlighted in blue. Use the number keys to switch between weapons, Mata - Tool modules and consumables.

The centre reticule will change dependent on the weapon or tool you have selected. The Kinetic Blast module (1) will consume energy when activated (Left mouse Button) which can be recharged through absorbing plant material. Energy levels are displayed as a bar centre left on the reticule.

Head towards the dropship, you will auto equip the weapon in front of you as you walk over it.

Please Note: To pick up any other objects you will need to switch back to your Kinetic Mata Tool (1) or building mode (Q) and use the Mining tool (Right Mouse Button) to absorb. Switch back to your Kinetic Shotgun with 4.

Press L to toggle your light.
Combat
Fend off the Splintermites on the way using the gun (Left mouse button to fire, Right Mouse Button to Aim, R to reload) or your other weapons (see below). Watch out for the sticky exploding shards they eject upon death.

Switch back to your Mata - Tool Kinetic Blast module (1) to Blast (Left mouse Button) or Smash enemies (hold Right Mouse Button down while moving the mouse in the desired direction).

You can also use your Melee module (F) to bash hostiles with an extendible baton while in a Tool Module mode.

Inventory
Lock Boxes in the world will contain loot, there are some nearby that have fallen from your dropship. Hold space and move forward to climb up objects. Sprint move forward and hold space to climb up higher ledges.

To open them get close and open the inventory (I). Click the icon to quickly move all items to your own inventory. You will find many useful items around the crash site that can help you in your survival.

To equip items, simply drag the item from your inventory onto the icons on bottom or your character on the left.

After exiting the dropship you will receive a waypoint notification. Follow the icon in the world to locate Alpha point C21.

Gathering Materials
On the way to the marker you are advised to collect materials along the way. To succeed on Pharus 7, you will need to be resourceful. Materials can be used for building, crafting, upgrading your weaponry and increasing the range of your Eden Kit.

Material shards can be found in trees, plants and rocks, and are also dropped from creatures and destroyed enemy hives. Use your scanner by looking at objects to determine their material content.

Don't miss the shards! These highlighted objects are the concentrated Materials themselves.

Raw Materials can be used to build structures and craft Compound Materials, consumables and weapons.

Use the mining tool (Right Mouse Button while in Tool/Module mode) to break down the object and absorb any useful component materials.

Eden Kit - Claim Structures and Distribute Power
Upon reaching the marker location you will be prompted to build an Eden Kit at the starter base.

Press Q to toggle build mode then place an Eden Kit with the Left Mouse Button.

Eden Kits distribute power and ownership information over the base network. Structures in the world can be claimed if under the shield of an Eden Kit that the player has placed.

Bases can be found and claimed in the world. Any Eden Kit(s) at their centre must destroyed and replaced with the player’s own. All turrets, utilities and blocks within the dome should be claimed.

Claimed structures can be absorbed and recycled if you wish to do renovations.

Eden Kits must be placed on a solid foundation, you can build them on existing foundations or place them on the ground with their own. The beam of the Eden Kit must have a clear path to the sky in order to distribute the shield.

The shield dome will also protect any shield the player has (some armour types provide shield, the Paladin set does not) from the effects of the corrosive atmosphere at night.

Structures placed outside of the range of the Eden Kit will degrade over time.

The Eden Kit can be upgraded to increase the range of the shield dome.

Other Utilities
Generator - Power

Place Generators underneath the shield of an Eden Kit to add to it’s power network. You can see the power a utility or defence will use or add with the bar on the right during placement.

Respawn Pad - Replication Unit

These utilities come into play when you die (and there will be a high chance of that!) You will be able to see any replication units that you own on the deployment screen. If you’re quick you may be able to recover any inventory items lost!

You can build multiple of these across the world if you like a lot of exploration. Without a replication unit you will not be able to respawn and must start over!

Fabricator - Crafting Station

These are your basic crafting station for standard survival and can process food in order to make it a more palatable consumable. The Fabricator can also craft ammunition and can create the compound materials required in weapon and armour crafting.

Consumables can be equipped to the bottom bar for easy access consumption.

Armoury - Crafting Station

This is where you can craft modules, weapon parts and armour to equip your pioneer with the tools for combat survival

You can also combine barrel and receiver weapon parts here into fully functioning tools of death.

Medical Station - Crafting Station

This is where you can create treatments in order to bring down your level of infection. It can also create health packs to heal your base health.
Construction
Construction in Eden Star is designed to be intuitive and flexible. You are able to snap components to existing structures with ease or establish new ‘grids’ at any horizontal rotation.

To enter build mode press Q
You will now see a radial menu.

MMB (press) will change category between Foundations, Primitives, Defences and Utilities

MMB Scroll will change the block type - eg Wall, Ramp, Half Wall, Window etc.

On the left you will see a window detailing the object you are about to place, its cost, hitpoints and damage resistance. You must have the required materials in order to construct, but you may pick any available base material. When the material text is red, you do not have the materials to construct the selected object.

Ctrl + MMB scroll will change the base material to use. Some base materials will be stronger and more resistant to certain damage types than others.

To place the selected object, press LMB.

Holograms will appear blue if they can be placed and red when they cannot. Look at previously built objects to snap the hologram to them.

When not looking at a previous structure you can use CTRL (hold) to snap to the previous grid. This allows you to place support structures in advance with the flexibility to join them up later if you wish.

To rotate the object before placement, hold LMB and move the mouse.

If you see ‘Cannot build: Unstable structure’ it means you cannot build any higher or further out from the foundations and you may need to create more supports.

To re-absorb the structure (undo) you must use the Energy Harness Module (RMB)

To exit build mode, press Q or just swap to another module/weapon using 1,2, 3, 4 or 5
Modifications
Construction of Fortifications, Lights and Doors is now performed with Modifications. Open your build menu and select the Modifications category, then Fortifications, Lights and Door icons as required.

Fortifications can be placed on exterior walls, doors into doorways and lights to walls or ceilings. Valid placement will show blue, left click to place.

Power
When building defences and utilities, the Power Bar will display with the hologram to show the current capacity and the change in power that will occur from building that object.

In this example, placing a second turret will take me to maximum capacity. 200/200 is the limit for a single level 1 Eden Kit.

In this example, placing a third turret will take me over capacity, to build this structure safely (without powering down all my defences) I must first upgrade my Eden Kit or build a generator to increase my power capacity.

Placing a turret will decrease the power capacity.

Placing a generator or Eden Kit will increase the power capacity, as will upgrading the Eden Kit.

If the power usage exceeds the capacity, the power network will become unstable and all items powered on that network will deactivate until a stable power source can be built.
Weapons and Tool Modules
Melee
Activated with F or when an empty slot is selected, this is your default combat tool when all else fails. The basic Melee module is the Baton but there is another you can build too...

---

Primary Modules
Activated with Left Mouse Button.
Switch between Primary Modules with keys '1', '2' and '3'

Kinetic Force

Stun enemies for a short time with a quick blast to the face.
This module consumes Energy that can be recharged through harvesting foliage in the world.

Kinetic Force Upgrade: Kinetic Laser

Concentrated sustained blast of Kinetic energy. If augmented correctly this Module can be refined to produce a focused, offensive beam in exchange for greater energy consumption per second.

This upgrade effectively adds another ability to the Kinetic Force Module allowing you to shoot a powerful laser from your palm by holding down the Left Mouse Button in addition to the short blast base functionality activated by tapping it. Works well with Mining as well as Combat, upgrades to this Module can have devastating effects.

Module: Gauss Cannon
This module consumes Gauss Ammo

Developed as a suppressive, close-range anti-infantry weapon, the Gauss Cannon is extremely effective at slicing directly through most solid armour carapace.

As a Primary Module, equipped to the RMD, you can activate it without switching weapons from the RMD. The benefit of this weapon is that you can still use the Energy Harness Secondary module without having to put the Gauss Cannon away. Imagine flinging enemies sky high with Smash and shooting them dead as they fall!

---

Secondary Modules
Activated with Right Mouse Button.

Energy Harness

This is your powerful harvesting tool, use this to absorb energy, gather or pick up items in the world.

You can also use it to wreak havok to creatures with the pre-activated upgrade - Smash. This powerful upgrade can be used to pick up creatures and smash them into the surrounding environment.

To activate Smash, hold Right Mouse Button over an enemy to hold it and move the mouse in any direction to fling the creature. You can chain smashes together if the enemy hits something and you continue to hold Right Mouse Button down, just move the mouse again to pick a new direction. Each time an enemy impacts something, it will take damage.

While an enemy is held, you can circle strafe-around it to better aim at hives with a horizontal Smash.

---

Tertiary Modules
Activated with 'E'

Regeneration

This Module arguments the MATA Tool which was originally used to repair weathered or damaged structures during mining operations.

If the local wildlife has wreaked havoc on your base you might want to invest in the Regeneration Module to repair your damaged Structures back to 100% health.

You must have all the Materials listed in the Repair Cost dialogue (appears when the reticle is over over damaged structures) in order to repair. The lower the Structure's health, the more Materials it will cost to Repair. As a Tertiary Module it is activated by the 'E' key by default. If you interrupt the operation, the Structure will not be repaired.

Regeneration with AoE Repair Upgrade:

---

Modular Weapons

Activated with Left Mouse Button when selected.
Switch between Weapon slots with keys '4' and '5'.
Push R to reload.

Please note, while in this weapon mode you will be unable to use RMB to harvest or smash. Switch back to your primary module with '1'.

Barrels and receivers can be combined in the Armoury (see utilities section above).

Currently Available Combinations

  • High Powered Receiver + Assault Barrel = Carbine
  • Heavy Receiver + Assault Barrel = LMG
  • Assault Receiver + Assault Barrel = Assault Rifle
  • Assault Receiver + Sniper Barrel = TAC Rifle
  • High Powered Receiver + Sniper Barrel = EHP Sniper
  • Heavy Receiver + Sniper Barrel = Pulse Cannon
  • Heavy Receiver + Shotgun Barrel = Kinetic Autorepeater
  • High Powered Receiver + Shotgun Barrel = Kinetic Shotgun
  • Assault Receiver + Shotgun Barrel = Kinetic Doubleshot
  • Assault Receiver + Side-Arm Barrel = Burst Pistol
  • Side-Arm Receiver + Side-Arm Barrel = Pistol
  • High Powered Receiver + Side-Arm Barrel = Magnum
  • Side-Arm Receiver + SMG Barrel = Mac Pistol
  • Heavy Receiver + SMG Barrel = Tactical SMG
  • Assault Receiver + SMG Barrel = SMG
Module Upgrades
Currently available upgrade trees include: Kinetic Force, Energy Harness, Gauss Cannon and Regeneration. Select a module and hit the 'Upgrade' button to bring up it's available upgrades.

Select an upgrade to view how much it costs to unlock, along with a description of what it does. You must have all the Required Materials in order to Unlock an Upgrade. Click 'Activate' to unlock an upgrade.

Note: Upgrades are permanent

Note: Certain Upgrades require you to press the Power Shift Key (CTRL by default). If this is the case it will state it in its description.
Survival
After a few nights you will notice that the local inhabitants seem to take personal offence to your presence on Pharus 7 and will congregate in greater numbers as the days progress. your base, specifically your Eden Kit will be essential in surviving more than a few days.

See those Red lines on the horizon at night? These are the beacons highlighting the concentrations of Tesslinium within the hives of Splintermites, Stalkers and IKAs. As the days go by, these creatures will reproduce at faster rates and send out more attackers night by night.

Higher level Hives are harder to destroy (both in hit-points as well as having more defenders) so it is best to tackle them early in order to gain the rewards within and escape with your life. New hives will develop each night so it is advised to keep on top of the enemy populations and maintain your base defenses before they overrun you.

Hives can be destroyed in numerous ways depending on what you have equipped and upgraded, including shooting them full of conventional ammo, blasting them with the Kinetic Laser, bashing them with your chosen Melee module (F) or picking up the defenders themselves and smashing them into their own nests.

Watch out for the defenders and don't forget to collect the valuable Tesslinium once the hive is destroyed!

It might take you a few attempts to work out which base locations work better than others or which configurations of turrets are most efficient at killing the Enemy, but that’s all part of the fun!

Multiplayer
Survival is fun with friends! Our new multiplayer game mode makes this possible.

To chat to others via our text chat system press [T] to type. You must be in range of other players. There is currently no world chat.

To team up with other pioneers you can create a colony.
To open the colony menu press I and click on the colony tab at the top left of the inventory.

From the colony menu you can create a colony, leave a colony and change colony member permissions.

To invite somebody to your colony, hold [R] when looking at them

Colony invites will appear in the colony menu

Things to note:
  • Defenses created in other colonies will be aggressive towards you unless you join the same colony. If you leave a colony, the defenses will target you once more, even if you were the one to build them while in the colony.
  • You can only regenerate health inside an Eden Kit of your own or your own colony.

Happy hunting!

in regards to your disco elysium review (you have comments turned off on both that and your profile), you can use healing items as you're taking damage, so you can finish the game with 1 morale and 1 health

Construction system need a lot of work to make it easer to use and there a lot of red zones, even when you make whole base some stuff you cant build inside base shows red zone also need some more structures like bigger walls or 4x4 foundations some bridges or cliff foundations that allow build on cliff side. Whole game damage system need to rebalance turrets/weapons/monsters. Weapons almost all are shit, tested them all fully upgraded they look cool and upgrade system nice.

What "dropship" should I head for? When I start the game, I spawn in a jungle and get attacked by kind of dinosaurs till I die. I dont know nothing about a dropship.

Building is very boring. You cant turn parts easily. I got bored in 1 hr. Now, game just standing in library... Please check out Fallot 4 building system : it's really cool and useful. Thanks.

No problem Honey Badger, sorry to hear your base is lost!

Left click and drag to rotate buildables, place foundations first and you can snap rotate primitives to them or freely rotate when not looking at any previously placed structures (note you can only build from primitives with a solid foundation).
The orange side faces out, you can use fortifications (in the modifications category) to clad the orange in a more durable material.

Tip: build turrets on top of pillars around your perimeter by first placing a foundation, then a pillar, and then a turret on top. It will keep them out of reach of ground enemies. You can also build half-walls around the base to further protect it.

Good luck :)
Honey Badger Apr 4, 2017 @ 2:04pm
thanks kittiedragon, base is already lost :(
How do you rotate walls? Is the orange side soft? No matter which way i face i seems to always put orange facing out.

The regeneration module can be made in the armory (find this in the utilities category of the build menu). It can be equipped to your tertiary slot currently (E). Once a module is made and equipped you can access its upgrade tree by clicking on it in the inventory and selecting upgrade, you should have an Energy Harness and Kinetic Force module equipped as default which are both upgradable too. Hope that helps!
