New this year at the track are extensions to the off-road endurance course, a few new berms and, most noticeably, brand new starting gates for the motocross track, the same gates used for professional motocross races seen on TV.

"It's like taking backyard racing to the next level," Guam International Raceway Motorcycle and ATV Club president Jeff Rios said. "This makes it real."

Prior to the start gate, motocross races got off to an almost rolling start. They weren't trying to inch out ahead, but revving, rolling and creeping forward before the flag dropped was inevitable.

The gate makes that impossible, and detrimental.

A rider who gets too close to the gate before it drops could see the steel structure land on a wheel and get wedged under the fender.

The gate is controlled manually and racers have a 10-second window when they can expect the start. After the flag drops, the gate operator starts a clock.

The operator, standing in a "doghouse" in the center of the gate with 10 starting spots on each side, stomps a pedal to drop the gate.

The entire structure, which includes an 85x20-foot concrete pad, 20 powder-coated starting gates and an 8-foot-high concrete back wall, has about a $15,000 value, Rios said. That cost was all covered by sponsors, either through work or equipment.

The primary benefactor was Monster Energy, the title sponsor of the Guam motocross series and the AMA Supercross series that inspired Rios to pursue the start gates in the first place, a process that took only six weeks.

Rios returned, took Monster's Joe McDonald to lunch and asked him about the possibility. To Rios' surprise, McDonald asked for a quote. Rios returned three days later with a price and McDonald agreed"
