Welcome to Ladies Day at Aintree, a very modern tradition, but one that has latched itself securely into the national consciousness as if it has always been there. It is no more than a decade or so old but today, the Friday of the Grand National Festival, is a day of uninhibited fun. And an event which provides a colourful curtain raiser to the main event the following day: the greatest national hunt race in the world, a day when 600 million people (most of whom have never been to an actual horse race) tune into a television and scream themselves... hoarse.

“Ladies Day is massive in Liverpool,'' says Barbara Daley, a Liverpool hairdresser of 25 years’ standing. ''It’s one of the days when people want to dress up, show off, look good and have a good time. It starts from breakfast and we make a whole day of it. People look forward to it all year long.

As Marcus Armytage, the Telegraph’s racing correspondent, and himself the inspiration of much lively enthusiasm in 1990, as the last amateur jockey to win the Grand National, aboard Mr Frisk, agrees: “Ladies Day is now as much part of Aintree as Becher’s Brook and the Canal Turn. And for many in the racing world, it’s their favourite day of the year.”
