Don’t panic, Metro is here to give you some tips on beating the rest and standing a serious chance of winning some money.

It’s AP McCoy’s last Grand National and he’ll be popular with punters in the £1million race on Shutthefrontdoor. That’s likely to be the shortest priced favourite since Red Rum, and would be the perfect way for him to bow out.

However, make no mistakes; the Grand National is as close to a lottery as you can get in horse racing, and there are some key pointers that can help you when it comes to finding a winner.

And they’re off! Here’s what to expect from the Grand Opening Day of the Crabbie’s Grand National 2015.

There are seven races happening today, with the biggest amount of prize money to be won on the 3.25pm Doom Bar Aintree Hurdle.

The races are traditionally measured in miles and furlongs, with the most prestigious races Graded 1, then Grade 2 and Grade 3.

The first race starts at 1.40pm with the Aintree Manifesto Novices’ Chase, Grade 1, 2m4f, with a prize of up to £90,000. The race is open to horses aged five years or older. The chase is named after Manifesto, a horse which ran eight times in the Grand National between 1895 and 1904, and won the race twice and finished third on three occasions.

At 2.15pm is the Anniversary 4YO Juvenile Hurdle, Grade 1, 2m1f, with a prize of £100,000. This race is open to horses aged four years and during its running there are nine hurdles to be jumped.

The 2.40pm race is the Betfred Bowl Steeple Chase, Grade 1, 3m1f, prize of £150,000, which sees some the best runners jumping 19 fences in the effort to emulate last year’s victory by Paul Nicholls’ trained, Silviniaco Conti.

Up at 3.25pm is the big one, the Doom Bar Aintree Hurdle, Grade 1, 2m4f, with a prize of £200,000. It’s open to horses aged four years or older. This hurdle race often features horses that have previously run over a shorter distance in the Champion Hurdle and the last to win both events in the same year was Istabraq in 1999. Sam Twiston-Davies was the winner of last year’s Aintree Hurdle on board The New One.

After the Grade 1 races there are three more to round off the afternoon.

4.05pm: The Crabbie’s Fox Hunters’ Steeple Chase (Class 2)

4.40pm: The Betfred Red Rum Handicap Steeple Chase (Grade 3)

5.15pm: The Injured Jockeys Fund Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)

There’s more fun to be had when the races are over, with live entertainment from Liverpool legends, The Christians at 5.30pm in the Equestrian Centre.
