Adventures in Game Development Chapter 30 & 31
HUGE UPDATE and Adventures in Game Development Chapter 28
If you like what you see and gave us an upvote, please don't forget to support us on Kickstarter, as this will give us the funding required to complete the project!

Elysian Shadows is an indie 2D RPG being developed for Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, Ouya, and even the Sega Dreamcast (not even kidding). We fuse aspects of 16-bit classical RPGs with a highly stylized, modern vision by using dynamic lighting, physics, and audio engines along with swapping between 2D and 3D perspectives. Our goal is to create the "next-generation" of the 2D RPG in terms of gameplay, graphics, and audio. We want to reinvent and revitalize the aging genre for a new generation of platforms, while still remaining true to the 16-bit charm of the SNES and Genesis classics that we all grew up loving.

Our aim is to take the 2D RPG genre that we love and make it relevant by today's standards. This means pushing pixel art to its limit by coupling that nostalgic aesthetic with modern rendering techniques to present our world with things like:

  • Dynamic Lighting w/ Pixel Perfect Shadows
  • Full-fledged Rigid Body Physics
  • Real-time Day & Night System
  • Advanced AI for NPC's, Enemies etc
  • Particle Engine to Simulate Weather and Spell Effects etc

The world inside Elysian Shadows -- Asphodel -- is caught in an ever rising conflict between magic and technology. Magic is a gift reserved for only the loyal followers of The Creator, while the non religious sects of society are forced to rely upon technology in their daily lives. The world has been divided by the war and society remains in two halves.

Our story starts with the hero Julien. A young man struggling to keep his head above water after the disappearance of his parents. Working as a "Digger" for the local Museum, he and his friend Eryn (the "Scholar") discover a hidden secret inside the local ruins that pushes the conflict to a critical level.

As a consequence of this discovery, Julien and friends are thrust into the middle of the fight and set out on a journey to uncover the truth behind magic and The Creator.

Travelling through lush environments and diverse biomes, exploring mysterious ruins and caves, housing remnants of previous iterations of humanity and plenty of secrets. Can you solve the mystery of the ancient civilizations and prevent the destruction of your own?

Nope, they're not going to upload the files for free. They have a legal publisher that makes offical dreamcast disks for indie developers.

How are you going to charge for the Dreamcast version? Are you even able to legally do that? You'd probably have to upload the files onto the internet free so people can burn it to a disc just like any other DC homebrew or burned DC game, right?
