Combat 101 [outdated]

This guide will tell you how to effectively engage the enemies in The Forest, accompanied by pictures and videos.

Enemies

There are several enemies in The Forest, the mutants and the cannibals.

Cannibals:
The cannibals are the enemy which you will most commonly see, they hunt in packs and will try and protect their friends.




On the first day, a cannibal scout party is sent to investigate the crash, they are not overly aggresive but will engage the player if they feel threatened. As the days go on, they will become increasingly aggressive, and will assemble in larger groups.

Mutants:
These masses of body parts move very slowly and are incredibly tough to kill however they are only found in the depths of caves.

Cannibal Tactics and Behaviour

Cannibals will hunt in groups from 3 to 5, they will stick with their group and try to protect them.

When a group of cannibals are attacked or attacking, they will try to surround the player, and then run in at once slashing and jumping. If one of their comrades are killed, they will run away and try and get back up.



Sometimes if they are attacked, and feel threatened, they will climb up a tree out of reach and jump from tree to tree dropping down on the player as a group.



Cannibals can be scared off if their comrades die, or from burning effigies, or from flares and flare guns.

Armour

Armour is great as it is easily accessible and will absorb the equivilant of your health bar in damage when at fully equipped. You can put armour on, on the fly by left clicking on the lizard skins in your inventory. The amount of armour you have is indicated by the yellow bar along side your health.

Camo and Concealment

In order to keep your visibility low, it is possible to camoflage yourself with mud, this can be achieved by smashing foliage and cutting trees.



When approaching the enemy it is possible to stay undetected by crouching and walking slowly over to them. You can also stick behind dense foliage and thick trees to decrease your visibility from the enemy.

Offensive

Once you are on the offensive, there are 2 ways in which you can kill a cannibal;
With fire,
Or with a melee.

With Fire:
When using the molotovs keep in mind that the fire spread is random so try not to throw it near your feet. Aim ahead of the enemy so when they charge on you, they will catch light. Once a cannibal is set alight, their death will be immanent. When using a flare gun, remember that you cannot aim the gun vertically, only horizontally. The flare projectile can pass through multiple enemies at a time, conserve your ammo as it is in short supply.



With a Melee:
When they run at you, swing your melee at them which will halter their charge and stun them for a split second, if they are alone try and hit them multiple times and you will beat them into the ground. At this point they will try and run. Correct me if I am wrong but it takes at least 10 hits from the axe to kill a cannibal and if there are many their attacks will be relentless. If you are fighting multiple cannibals always be aware of your surroundings and do not let any get behind you. Always when fighting with melee weapons try and conserve your energy and make sure you are prepared as accessing the inventory screen costs time.

I don't believe that the one hit pummel is supposed to be a feature, my best bet would be to avoid the cannibals with stone axes...
