How To Get The Map Editor To Work (also for GOG version)
By Supercreature
This guide will help you to setup your Silent Storm map editor so that you can modify your game. There are also links to download the map editor if it wasn't included with your game like with the GOG version. The map editor will allow you to change most aspects of the game like skins, character and weapon attributes, and even allows you to make your own playable levels.

The Map Editor
Silent Storm's map editor has always been difficult to get running. Most versions of the game don't include the Microsoft SQL Server which you need. This guide will show you how to download and setup the Microsoft SQL Server so that you can modify your game. If your version of Silent Storm didn't come with a map editor at all, you can download it here:

http://www.strategycore.co.uk/files/s2-3-mapedit/

NOTE: This download is missing the tools which you need to compile and save changes within the map editor. You can download these tools here:

http://www55.zippyshare.com/v/34096074/file.html

Copy the contents of both downloads into your main Silent Storm game folder.
Setting Up Microsoft SQL Server
First download MSDE2000 here for free:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-za/download/details.aspx?id=22661

Run the file once it has downloaded. This will extract the installer to the folder that you choose. Go to the folder where it was extracted to. Edit the file setup.ini and add these two lines:

BLANKSAPWD=1
SECURITYMODE=SQL

This is how the edited file should look:

Save the file. Then run setup.exe. You should not be prompted to do anything else. Once it has finished you must restart your PC. After that you should see the SQL server icon running in the system tray. Go to your Silent Storm game folder and run MapEdit.exe (If your version of Silent Storm has no map editor, you can download it in the previous section). If everything was installed correctly and the SQL server is running, then the map editor should run with no error message.

And there you go! If you still have issues getting it to run, leave a comment and I'll see if I can help you out.

Well I chose new installation for the Studio management as per the recommendation of some random article. I opened the server management but it wants me to connect to my own desktop or something.

Installing both software's did not resolve the missing SQLserver thingy.

I installed MSSQL SERVER 2008 R2 but the mapeditor still can't find the service. Downloaded the Management studio but not sure how to configure the installation.

For the first file I selected Upgrade, but not sure if that's applicable for the studio file. Buggered if I know what these even do lol.

I can't even run Silent Storm on WMvare 16 and if I'm trying to run editor. it returns Direct3d8 error. Any solutions?

If somebody still want to run an editor, here is some tips:

1) You can`t run it on win10 or latest versions of win7. Use virtual win XP OS;

2) SQL server is no longer available on MS site. It is impossible to find it in the net now at least i couldn`t , but fortunately the file was lying around on my old PC, you can get it here:
https://y.adi.sk/d/tqfs_PmYOBDjFg
delete . from link;

3) It is better to use WMvare rather than Oracle Virtual box, cause on oracle editor returns Direct3d8 error and you can`t just download directx8, thats not work.

Good luck! :revolutionaryhat:
