Production Update
Final hours
  • I was kind of shocked at first to find out that people love the game. I'm continually surprised and delighted that people can look past all the flaws and garner an enjoyable experience out of something I've created.
  • I overestimated the amount of work ahead of me. I thought people would blow through the demo in no time and complain about how short it was. The reality is, not a single Let's Player has finished the demo in one video without a lot of editing. Some of that is due to frustrations with level design and controls, but a lot of it is just that people like to explore the world and figure things out for themselves, which is amazing. Armed with that knowledge, I'm much more confident that I can create the experience I want in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Running a successful Kickstarter takes a lot more than just a great vision with a solid prototype. I failed big-time in the PR department, partly due to lack of experience, and partly because I'm just bad at it. I make games, I don't sell them.
  • With that in mind, I realize now that if a Kickstarter fails, it doesn't necessarily mean the idea is not worth pursuing. Many failed campaigns later re-launch and go on to exceed their goals. (I won't be doing that because I don't want to take any more time away from development.)

Knowing all that, I'm confident that I can find the necessary resources to make this game happen even if we don't reach our Kickstarter goal. It may take more time and money on my part, but it will happen!

In fact, it's happening right now. I better get back to coding!

Description
Release date: November 2014
First-person parkour. Every move has the potential to modify the environment. Surfaces pop in and out of existence at will.

Play the demo here![et1337.itch.io] NOTE: player model and animations are placeholder.

Lemma's main goal is to allow creativity through movement. I love games that let you create things, but am always frustrated by the blandness of the act of creation: you click in Minecraft and a block appears. In Lemma, you create things as you move through the space, through the ordinary movement mechanics of the game. You never just walk up and press a button. You have to perform some maneuver or interact with the environment in some way.

You can modify the environment in Lemma through several different systems that work together. The first allows you to extend an existing wall or platform by running off the edge of it. Keep running as if the wall does not end, and the game fills in the gap for you.

Walls and platforms can be extended

You can activate the second system any time you're in the air. The game predicts where you're going, enters a "slow motion" mode, and offers several structures which you can use to maintain your momentum. They're transparent until you touch them; perform any parkour move on a structure and it becomes real.

Every voxel is fully physics-enabled. These aren't Minecraft voxels where you can knock out the base of a tree and the upper branches just float in the air. Some levels require you to strategically destroy supports holding up sections of the level.

It should take around three hours to beat the game on the first try (sorry, no multiplayer!) While it's not an open world game, you will have some freedom to choose which levels to complete first. Lemma consists of a series of interconnected worlds linked by portals; some portals lead you back to places you've already visited, and the choices you make in one world can have unforeseen impact on other worlds.

Will there be multiplayer?

No, sorry.

How much will it cost?

The planned price point is $10 USD.

Is there gamepad support?

Yes, the Xbox 360 controller is fully supported!

What about Mac and Linux?

The game is currently Windows-only. I would love to port it, but it will take a lot of effort. It's not out of the realm of possibility though!

What about Oculus Rift?

Maybe eventually.

Why is the player a girl?

Why not?

Is Lemma open source?

The engine and many of the assets in Lemma are completely open source. You can download the source right now from GitHub[github.com] and create your own campaign. The game is designed to be extremely mod-friendly; it includes a scripting system and a rough level editor.

What exactly is a lemma?

In math, a lemma is a theorem or proposition used as a stepping stone to a larger result.

What does that have to do with the game?

Maybe nothing, maybe EVERYTHING.

Why first-person view?

Something about first-person single player games really inspires me. And there are already tons of third-person parkour games. Go play Assassin's Creed, it's quite good!

Are games art?

That is a tricky question. It really depends on your definition of ludonarrative dissonance.

When is the release date?

November 2014.

btw i found a bug in the demo:
when you look at a wall and have a wall next to you
you can press lt rt lt rt lt (gamepad) to get to the very high top.
with this bug you can skip many parts of the game.

The controls are great. They feal much more intuitive than in AC. They also allow much more parkour freedom than any other parkour game I've ever played. I'd love to see a custom level/campaign set in a big city like NY. I've had no technical issues.

I have a question: Will there be a seperately sold OST for this game?
