HD Mod pack with achievements and Multiplayer

How to use the Steam HD pack without loosing achievments or multiplayer access.

Introduction

This guide will show you how to install the Steam HD mod pack without the need for eduke32 or any other seperate mod menu or side load option. It will not alter the way you already launch and play the game. The menus, game modes, steam overlay, and achievements, etc will function the same as they normally do with the base game. This simply changes the in game graphics. I will try to be as simple as possible with the steps to make this guide easy to follow, understand, and install without problems.

****NOTICE****

This mod is not 100% game changing. Since all side load options are being worked around, some parts of the game (mainly the dlc areas of the game) may not have the graphics changed to HD, or appear to be changed at all. This is normal and nothing went wrong with your mod installation. I am working on finding ways to make it more compatible than it is currently, but life, wife, and kids come first so my time is limited and progress will be slow on this front. Preperation

Before we get started lets back up everything. Chances are you won't need it but just in case something goes wrong you can use this back to start over without uninstalling and reinstalling the game from steam.

Navigate to your Steam Duke3D folder (Usually located at something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Duke Nukem 3D) back up the entire folder, it will help if you need to start over but this step IS IMPORTANT as you will need some of this backup later to replace key files the mod will overwrite

Downloads

Now that everything is backed up we are all set to download the HD mod Pack and the mod installation zip. You will need Winrar or some other zip program to unpack the contents of the downloads. I advise using winrar but really any zip management program of choice should do the trick.

First download the Main mod pack installing files (NOTE: If the links won't load by clicking on them, copy the page address and paste it into your address bar. This is confirmed as working using Chrome.)

Once all this is downloaded we are ready to unzip and install the mod

Instalation

Now for the tricky part, installing this so that it works with steams version of the game and won't require a second mod loading window or side loader to play.

Be sure to follow EVERY SINGLE STEP IN ORDER here or you may find your game not working and will have to start this all over. I suggest also making a backup of the downloads you just downloaded just in case you need them again. Installing them may delete the files when it is done and if you need to reinstall you will need the backup or need to redownload the packs.

Step 1

Extract the contents of the zip file you downloaded first (Duke Nukem 3D High Def Pack) into the base folder for the game (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Duke Nukem 3D) let it overwrite any files needed

Step 2

Once thats all in the folder and finshed drag and drop the second set of files you downloaded (Steam Duke High Def Modpack) into the Duke base folder as well

Step 3

With all the propper files in place open your Duke 3D base folder and run the setup.bat file that should now be in there. Once opened be sure to selct the option number 1 to install the Steam version. Follow all the prompts til it opens eduke32. Once thats open you can close it and continue installing the steam pack back from the dos prompt. The Eduke32 launcher should pop up after every part of the mod has been installed. One for every expansion and then the base game.

After you have followed all the prompts of the install go back into the setup.bat and select option 3 to install modpacks, this will install the steam version modpack needed to work with the steam version of the game and not Eduke32. It should be the only mod the installer has listed, just select it and be patient, depending on your system it may take awhile to unpack and install.

Step 4

Now that everything is installed we can mod the mod so to speak and make it work with the original game, lol. Don't get excited yet and launch the game we still have more work to do.

Remember that backup folder I said we would need later, well here's where that comes in. Go to your Duke 3D base folder and then open the bin folder. Now delete the duke3d.exec that was overwritten during the mods installation and replace it with the original one from your backup folder. Now the original exe from the steam version is restored and in place but we still aren't quite finished yet.

your duke3d/gameroot folder should contain these files for the HD mod to work











Step 5

Open steam and navigate to your Duke 3D game in your library. Right click on it and go to properties. now click on the "game launch options" and input the following line, you can copy and paste this if you like

-applaunch 225140 /gduke3d_hrp.zip /hhrp.def

if for some reason the above options dont work with your OS or system setup try this one
-xATGAME.CON -gplugandpray.zip -gDUKE3D.GRP

Click ok on the main box and you are all set to play Duke 3D with a working HD mod Pack! All the games original menus, multiplayer, and options should be working just as they did before we started this. Only now your game looks awesome once you start playing, lol. You can also leave auto updates enabled.

Opional Step - Installing the XXX mod pack

You may have noticed during the installation dos prompts there was an option to install a XXX rated pack. Due to the opoularity of this pack I will show you how to make that work without eduke32 as well

WARNING - This pack is well XXX rated. It shows nudity and other things not fit for children, elderly, religious, or well anyone who typically goes to bed before 10PM DO NOT share any screenshots you take of the xxx rated content added by this pack as it will more than likely get you banned or suspended from steam for its content. I take NO, repeat absolutely NO responsibility in what you do with the content of this pack, or the content itself should you find it offensive. You where warned

Now that thats out of the way lets install this pack. in your bin folder at the bottom should be a xxx_pack.zip file. Take this file and move it to the Gameroot folder (not the root folder for the game but the folder called Gameroot, confusing I know) Once you have that in place go back to your steam library, right click on Duke 3D and go to properties again, click the launch options button and at the end add the option

-gxxx_pack.zip

Making the full string for it look like this

-applaunch 225140 /gduke3d_hrp.zip /hhrp.def /gxxx_pack.zip

as before if it fails to load the HD pack try this set of options instead.
-xATGAME.CON -gplugandpray.zip -gDUKE3D.GRP -gxxx_pack.zip

Now you are all set to launch the game and enjoy the view ;)

Known Issues/Troubleshooting

As this pack is not being loaded by a side loading mod loader like eduke it does have some issues. I will list all I have noticed myself so far and if you notice any be sure to let me know and I will add them to the list. This is my first guide so I'm sure there is something I left out or may need to improve lol.

Known Issues

Lighting - You may noticed some of the screens have dramactically better lighting than others. This will depend on your video card. Not all cards will work with it and since we are using the original games exe to play this mod there is no option for dynamic lighting. The only way to fix this if you find your game looking too dark or suffering from uneven lighting is to go to the options menu and change the lighting setting to "fast". The game will loose some of the HD detail in the process but it becomes playable.

Missing textures - You may notice some textures here and there are the original texture and not HD like they should be with the mod. So far I find this common with conflicts caused by the XXX pack. Some of the posters or signs in the game are their original form and not the XXX hd packs. Really no way to fix this that I found. Just be warned that some signs may not be in HD while using the XXX pack

Choppy textures - This seems to occur most often in multiplayer while playing a USER made map. They may use a texture or set of textures that don't work well with the mod. The result is Duke's on screen weapon or hand becomes choppy or invisible while reloading in front of these textures.

@Pac I agree. I have never liked the 3D voxel sprites with the HRP. I am a big fan of a lot of the recent ESRGAN upscale texture packs out there tho. But they can still be hit or miss.
