What's the story of Fringes of the Empire?

The year is 2600. You have been hand picked to head the crew of the UFS Intrepid, a specialist ship designed to aid the fleet in defending UFSE-controlled space. As ambassador, liberator, investigator and administrator, you will defend the Empire from a variety of invaders, while discovering what secrets the quadrant has to offer. Manage your crew, explore starbases and other unique locations, fight invading fleets and engage the pirates in this super-fantastic futuristic sci-fi adventure.

What kind of game is this?

Fringes of the Empire will be a hybrid 2D Top-Down and Platformer experience with RPG elements. You'll go from ship-to-ship combat to side-scrolling action as you explore the sectors that make up the UFSE alliance. Primarily a single player experience, the game may offer some social and multiplayer features. Choose from over 100 weapons as you unlock secrets that enrich the story and provide key upgrades to win the main plot line of the game.

Project Overview

Currently in development, Fringes of the Empire will be available on a wide array of platforms as early as Q4 2014. We currently have plans for Mac, Linux and Windows. There are tentative plans for a 'reduction' of the game for mobile platform Linux, as well as popular Android and iOS.

Fringes of the Empire takes place 400 years into the future of the game Empire in the Sky. By supporting Lost Astronaut's Fringes of the Empire, you not only get a great game but also you support the on-going development of Empire in the Sky, a unique RPG building game.

Developer's diary, late 2013:

It's hard to build this game because it is like building two games that interact with each other: the platformer game and the starship game. Many things have to be duplicated for each engine, but we're on track for our planned release so far. We'd like to get a version out to interested people as early as Q1 2014, as we seek Kickstarter crowdfunding and hope to build a community that enjoys playing and modding the game as well as providing useful feedback.

We need your help to make it all possible! It has taken quite a long time for me to generate the skills necessary to produce this game, and produce the art and music. For those who like the genre, I am trying to remain true to the classics while focusing on a unique story and world that combines aspects of post-apocalyptia with space epics.

Multiplayer is the biggest conundrum. We all know that multiplayer, done "wrong", means a bad experience, and in many cases doing it "right" also has its drawbacks. I'm trying to create a cooperative experience where you can share your explorations with a small party of individuals, so right now I'm thinking about how to make it happen without too much of a headache for anybody.

Most of the development and art creation aspects are in full swing focusing on the planetary adventures. The final steps sometime late next year will be to assemble our creatures for a "group photo", and wrap up all the missions and locales into a single player campaign with cooperative elements. The idea is that the host is the main player and if you join with your host you are submitting to be a subordinate crewmember helping out on the planet-side missions. You'll be able to sit inside the ship while the player controls it from the classic top-down view. When he/she lands on a planet or boards a ship, you'll share your experiences of tackling the objective together, and both of you will reap experience. The experience and loot gathered cooperatively you can use later when you're the host or playing offline/single player.

This actually looks pretty fun to play and I like the style it's in and you're actually including a level editor which is just simply amazing.

@Be2maru248 It seems unlikely I would be able to translate to Japanese nor implemented it specially for Japanese computers, as it is not yet clear if it will be Greenlit. I'm open to this concept but there would have to be some funding to push that through.
