Adventurers are independent people who make the decision to take on adventure for money and the thrill of it. If you didn't hire them, they would go down there themselves. In fact, they do take on jobs themselves. Why did Louie come to town in the first place? To seek out the dungeons himself! Nobody dragged him into it, nobody forced him. If anything, you aren't sending him down there, you are simply going along for the ride at a cost.

You aren't sending adventurers to the battlefield. They send themselves, and you can pay a fee to hang out and get some gear.... let's see if the loot you get in return for your investment even covers the cost.
