Description
Followers & hirelings can ride horses instead of running behind. You can buy them from any of the city stables. Just mount your own horse and your companion will mount theirs. The followers horse will track the player's horse to prevent them from getting lost. A dedicated Horse Call mod (players horse) is recommended. However one is being developed. NOTE! Version 2.0. had some scripts missing. Sorry about that! Corrected since version 3.5+

Horses For Followers is now a standalone mod. Better Follower Improvements is no longer needed. Also Followers now very responsive and will mount / dismount their steeds within 2 seconds. Note: Any faster will take unnecessary resources from the game and make the followers dismount robotically.

IMPORTANT! NEW IN THIS UPDATE
The bug that caused the Bill of Sale Menu to not show has a solution which is in this update. It only affected users who upgraded to 3.9.0. This bug does not affect new users or those who re-installed over a cleaned save.

This is what to do when the update is installed :-
Go to the stable where you bought the follower-horse. Don't go to the wrong stable because it won't work properly.
Speak to the Ostler and select topic "I need a new Bill of Sale".
The old Bill of Sale will be removed, and a new one will be given to you. This will reset the attached script.
Read Bill of Sale to tactivate the menu.

NOTE: This will not work if -
1) you don't have a Bill of Sale in your inventory.
2) Your follower's horse is not from this stable or is dead.
3) Followers Horse came from Riften, where there are no Ostler topics (see known issues)
4) The original Windhelm Ostler has been replaced.
If so, then your only option is to re-install the mod over a cleaned save.

Last update
i)BUG FIX: When a quest replaces your current follower with a temporary team mate, the follower is now dismissed properly.
i) Hirelings will have new topics (previously hotfixed)
ii) Horse Management Utility (Bill of Sale): Menu less cluttered
iii) Expanded Player as Follower: Destinations can be preferred path or not. A little disappointed because in Oblivion this meant cross country riding, but this is not so in Skyrim.


Description:
Allows a current vanilla follower to mount their horses. Follower horses have been added to stables (Whiterun, Windhelm, Solitude, Marakath and Riften).

The horse can be owned by the “current Follower, player or hireling factions”, not an individual follower. This means that even if you change followers, don't buy a new horse.

Followers horses are set to bolt during combat, and then return after combat, thus greatly increasing survivability. Dead follower horses will eventually replaced at original stable to buy.

Horse will follow the players unridden horse. To take advantage of this, A Horse Call feature is being developed. You can safely test this feature now via the Bill of Sale utility. Don't worry, It will be converted into a magic spell when ready.

Follower As leader. Set Followers destination via the followers topics. When the follow starts to lead (may take a short while) follow (or race) your follower. 1) Dismount to go back to normal. 2) Draw a weapon to make the follower "temporarily" follow again.

Important: BETTER FOLLOWER IMPROVEMENTS plugin is now part of this mod's plugin. If you have an earlier version less than 2.0.0, make a partially clean save (a save with both plugins unselected in the mod switcher) before using this version. Unsubscribe from Better Follower Improvements and delete it's plugin. Then re-select Horses for Followers and load the clean save.

Known Issues
------------
NEW:
a) If you sell a player horse, the old horse may not return to its stables. [Workaround until fixed] mount old horse once more, then new horse.
b) Horse Utility (Bill of Sale) Menu will not appear when followers have been replaced by temporary companions.
c) FAST TRAVEL: If a follower is dismounted and player fast travels to an "enclosed" city, their horse will teleport.
[workaround] make sure follower is mounted before fast travel.
d) Fast travelled to Dragonreach but where's my follower? Follower is inside Whiterun's main gate. [solution] None, Just enter Dragon reach, and the follower will catch up.
e) [Reminder] Riften ostler has no topics as it was removed due to an incorrect understanding of what turned out to be a Bethesda's Dialogue bug which they have fixed. Use Ledger until added back.

[Old]
1) FAST TRAVEL: If player fast travels to an "walled" city, while follower is dismounted, their horse will teleport. Best result is when both horses are mounted.
2) Fast Travel to Dragonreach. Follower spawns at main gate instead.
3) Reminder: Riften ostler has no topics to sell a followers horse. It was removed due to an incorrect understanding of a formaer Dialogue bug caused by Skyrim updates. Use Ledger until added back.
4) The Follower's horse old will not return to stables if you buy another follower's horse. [Solution] Sell old one using Bill of Sale functions.
5) The follower & their horse will now fast travel with the player. However, there are restrictions:
- Player & follower should be both be mounted for best results.
6) If, for some reason, you have more than one followers horse, all horses will teleport with you. [Solution] Sell one of the other horses via the Bill of Sale.
7) Fast travel to enclosed citys such as Whiterun. Problem resolved (see 1).

Q1: My follower will not ride the horse I just bought for them. Why not?

A1: Use the Bill of Sale to select another owning faction. Current Follower Faction is the most reliable but blocks player activation.

A2: This mod only references vanilla NPCs. If you have follower mod, see below.

A3: Possibly, a currently active quest will occasionally override the follower.

A4: Another mod could be conflicting with this one. If so, try switching the load order so this mod loads later.

Q2: My follower is from another mod, will he/she be able to ride these horses?

A1: The follower needs AI that includes Current Follower Faction and Global follower count as conditions. They should be dynamically added/removed via script to/from the Current Followers Faction. Also increase/decrease global follower count.

Q3: The Ostler at Windhelm is dead, and the backup ostler will only sell the player horse. What’s wrong?

A: This should be fixed by the SEQ file, but still need to test. As a workaround, activate the Ledger provided at the stables. Not to be confused with the forgery ledger :)

looks pretty good!! but i need to ask does this work for multiple followers ? because i got another mod and i own 7 followers now i want them all to ride on shadow mene horse (that one from dark brotherhood black horse with red eyes) is that possible ?

I downloaded the latest adition (stand alone version some months ago). The issue is that the followers horse that I purchased at the Whiterun stable does not always return to the Whiterun stable after I release my follower. This does not happen all of the time, but it seems the horse returns to the place where the action took place. I recruted my housecarl from Riften to accompany me to Tovalds cave. After adventuring in Tovalds cave and releasing my follower the horse returned to Tovalds cave instead of returning to the Whiterun stable where I purchased the horse. The same thing happened when recruiting my housecarl and adventuring in Volskygge in Solitude. When I return to the Whiterun stable and call the followers horse it marches back to the location of the adventure.

I am hoping that you can solve this problem as I have had your mod since I began the game some years ago and this is a recent occurance.

My follower Lydia had a horse. I got a new follower. When I tried to get her a horse, Lydia's vanished. Bought 2 horses for her in different towns complete with bills of sale. She wouldn't accept them. Unsubbed new follower. Didn't work. Had to load previous game to restore normal.
Original download worked just great. I always had a nagging sense of wrongness about loping across the countryside, while poor Lydia sprinted along behind. This is a great little mod, but seems to have a lump or two when it comes to trying to mount more than one follower.

Hey, I'm sorry, but I accidentally clicked through all the dialogue and now have no idea how to add the SEQ file in. I tried deleting/unsubscribing resubscribing, but the dialogue didn't show up. How do I add the SEQ file so I can buy a horse for my follower?

You need to add the SEQ file in. I could not for the life of me figure out how to add it into my game to make the dialouge work. So until this mod has everything provided with one button click to make it all work without me having to dig around the internet for an hour to figure out something that has such vague and complicated answers, unsubbed.

I just wanted to add a comment saying that this is a slight annoyance but whenever a wild wolf or a bandit or any hostile enemy comes near me, by follower dismounts his horse, and fights the mob, which is fine, except for the fact that his horse just sprints the opposite direction and my follower will follow me while I'm on my horse instead of getting on his own. He will only mount up on his own horse if I ride all the way back to where it ran off to. My follower is Inigo, a modded follower, by the way, so it may just be unique to him.
My horse, however, when I dismount, brazenly charges head-first into whatever enemy I might be fighting, even a dragon, so that's a bit annoying but every horse does that even in the vanilla game.
