Cool Mods for Skyrim Special Edition
By MonkeyEmperor
Hey all :)

Having recently got back into Skyrim I thought I would post a list of Mods that I have been using. I have looked long and hard for ones that are not heavily dependent on other mods or that adversely affect game performance.

Every mod from Nexus that I have included is at the time of writing bug-free as far as I know. If you do encounter issues then each mod has its own Forum link where hopefully you can get assistance.

This guide covers a diverse number of mod categories from simple Armor replacers to fully fledged quests such as the Fabulous `The Forgotten City` by Modern Storyteller.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I have :)

I wanted to give a HUGE thumbs up to the guide I found about taking perfect screenshots by Sorter which can be found By clicking this Link

That's all for now :0

P.S: When clicking links there is no way of avoiding the hand holding `You are leaving Steam message`. Yeah, Thanks, Valve I know I clicked a link... Sigh.

For New Adventurers
Firstly, WELCOME :)

If you have just purchased the game then you are in for a real treat. Skyrim is a massive game that you can play pretty much however you like. You are not restricted to the usual fantasy tropes of Warrior, Wizard or Theif. If you have always wanted to be a Mage who wields a Two-handed Hammer while resurrecting your foes and slinging fireballs then this is the game for you.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released back in November 2011 and the Special Edition came along in November 2016. In all that time the amazingly talented mod community have released some amazing content for both versions which have added a stunning amount of new content to the game.

This Guide aims to help you choose some of the better-known mods along with my personal favourites. As you discover more you will find that some need to have other mods installed in order for them to work. The main site that I use for mods is called Nexus and there is a very helpful community there should you run into issues or just have general questions.

One mod that pretty much every other mod relies on is the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP) so that should be your first order of business. Either use This Link [www.nexusmods.com]for the Nexus version or the Bethesda Link in the in-game mods section.

There are two major points you need to be aware of when modding your game :

1: Achievements will be disabled. Considering the amazing things that can be added to the game this is a minor tradeoff.

2: Sometimes mods can be in an Alpha or Beta state or generally buggy. There is a possibility that you may encounter issues. Just make sure to save regularly and keep backup saves.

I hope you find these mods both useful and easy to use.

Enjoy !

Mods that require SKSE (Skyrim Script Extender)
As you look through the various mods on Nexus you may find some that require SKSE to work. Fear not though as this is a relatively easy process to accomplish.

Firstly you will need This Link[skse.silverlock.org].

Make sure you download version 2.0.6 (current as of the time of writing). This is supplied as a 7z archive.

Once this has been extracted to the folder of your choice make sure to look at the readme file for instructions on how to add the files to your steam directory.

I will mark any mods that need this extension in the guide if you prefer to use standalone mods.

Happy Hunting :)

Installing the Mods
There are two kinds of mods covered in this guide, those accessible from the In-Game Menu and those on Nexus.

For the first installation is as easy as downloading the mod from the various categories and for those from Nexus the Nexus Mod Manager [www.nexusmods.com]is the easiest and most hassle-free solution.

So far I haven't experienced any issues with the Load order, but if you are planning on installing lots then downloading LOOT (Load Order Optimization Tool)[www.nexusmods.com] is probably a good idea to avoid any bugs or conflicts.

Should you experience any issues then I would direct you to the Nexus Forums[forums.nexusmods.com] where there are lots of helpful folks who can and will help you if possible. If you have an issue with the Bethesda Mods then the Forums can be found here[bethesda.net].

Should you have any questions or comments please feel free to ask and I will do what I can to help.

Cheers All :)

Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch

Add to Library[bethesda.net]

A comprehensive bugfixing mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition. The goal of the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (aka USSEP) is to eventually fix every bug with Skyrim Special Edition not officially resolved by the developers to the limits of the Creation Kit and community-developed tools, in one easy-to-install package.

Features:
- Hundreds of gameplay, quest, NPC, object, item, text and placement bugs fixed.
- Created by the authors of the Unofficial Oblivion Patch series.
- No unsafe changes (such as deletions of stock objects).
- Designed to be compatible with as many other mods as possible.ed

Pretty much a standard install for a better game experience.

Unread Books Glow Redux

Add to Library[bethesda.net]

If you do not have this version, get it! Unread Books Glow is now blazing fast. Unread books will be glowing when you enter a cell. They no longer pop on a second after you enter and the reset function now takes less than a second ( depending on your system and on how many mods you are running ). It also no longer has any script properties so it can be updated without the need for a clean install. Another feature is the renaming of the quests and the spell while keeping the name of the .esp the same. This "should" allow someone to upgrade from any previous version without issue.

Yay! No more reading EVERY book in EVERY location just in case I missed one :P

Deadly Wenches - Requires Immersive Wenches Mod

Add to Library[bethesda.net]

Wenches are happy about serving drinks, working at inns/castles and live a normal life in their towns, all people are happy about it, they are glad about their presence and to enjoy their beauty.
Even when sometimes wenches are annoyed by drunks and dovahweirdos they try to do their best and smile for them. : )

But...

Some other wenches are tired of that...

Girls Kicking Butt for Goodness. What's not to like?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merchant in Inns

Add to Library[bethesda.net]

This Mod places Merchants in all Inns with plenty of gold and goods of all kinds.

All Inns now have Merchants. Those settlements without Inns have Merchants in easy to find locations. All Merchants have plenty of gold, more than enough to pay for what you are carrying.

A nice lore friendly mod that is very handy for those `Man I need to sell my stuff` moments :)

Animation
Pretty Female Idles SSE

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Does what it says on the tin. No more females standing about like stiff boards...
Armor Mods
Daedric Assasin Light Armor

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Ever wanted a light Daedric armor that also looked light? look no further. The armor can be crafted with the Daedric Smithing perk.

This set looks amazing. I really wanted to stick with light armor but needed something a bit darker and dangerous looking than what was available in the vanilla version. Really nice look for all Thieves and/or Assassins.

Gwelda Armor Pack - DX Mini Armor Collection SSE

Gwelda Armor Pack contains three armors. Vampire, Dawnguard and Witch. All have a variety of customization options from trousers, socks, stockings and hoods of different hair colours. Vampire and Witch are Cloth outfits while Dawnguard is a Light Armor with stats equal to Dragonscale. Converted for use in SSE.

Very nice outfits that are PERFECT for all Children of the Night >:)

Immersive Armors

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Immersive Armors seeks to drastically enhance the variety of armors in the world of Skyrim in a lore-friendly way. The goal of every set is to blend into the lore, balance, and feel of the game for the most immersive experience possible.

A really cool mod that adds a nice mix of armors to NPC's and makes it feel more immersive.

TERA Armors collection - Special Edition

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

This mod will give you 64 (68 CBBE) armors from the game TERA Online (23 heavy, 28 light, and 13 robes (SSE CBBE 17 Robes), converted for use in Skyrim with the CBBE SSE, UNP, UNPB, Seraphim, and SeveNBase female body and the vanilla male body, all with balanced stats and smithing recipes. Some armors are on the weaker end while some are intended for end-game characters. Some higher level armors require appropriate smithing perks to be craftable, while some are available for you from the start

Just WOW....

Audio & SFX
Immersive Sounds - Compendium

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

From the Author:

The aim of ISC is to greatly expand the functionality and scope of the audio in Skyrim. The vanilla sound design is in pretty dire straits, and my educated guess for this is that it was largely hamstrung by being primarily developed for ageing console hardware, and thus sacrificed ambition for sound to instead prioritize those resources for other things like better visuals.

The goal is to have all of these small disparate elements add up and provide a more varied, dynamic and reactive audio experience. Ultimately this is also a significant boon to how the entire gameplay feels as there is simply more appropriate feedback for the actions in the world. I am pretty confident when I say that this is probably the biggest individual audio mod on the Nexus in terms of the scope of what it’s doing.

This takes a bit of getting used to after the Vanilla sounds, the footstep volume definitely needs to be turned down as it sounded like I was clumping about in Seven League Boots on the default setting !! Makes combat sound SO much more visceral :)
Body, Face & Hair
ApachiiSkyHair SSE

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

New Female and Male Hairstyles for Humans, Elves and Orcs. Converted hair from Sims2 and Sims3. Standalone version.

A really nice selection of styles for the discerning Dragonborn.

PLEASE NOTE THE LINK TO THIS MOD INCLUDES ADULT CONTENT.

Caliente's Beautiful Bodies Enhancer -CBBE-

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

CBBE replaces the vanilla female body that all adult female characters (player and NPC) share, with one that is fully customisable with the BodySlide tool. By default, there are three nude options available that don't require anything but installation, as well as two underwear styles for these body shapes.

Also included are all vanilla and DLC outfits converted to the base three body shapes, with additional BodySlide compatibility including sliders and many zaps.

If you install Bodyslide & Outfit Studio[www.nexusmods.com] you can alter the shape to your heart's content.

What can I say? No longer do the females look all weird and flat. One of the best known body replacers for a good reason.

Realistic Hair Colors

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

From the Author:
Have you ever looked at the hair colors in Skyrim and thought to yourself, "these are terrible" ? Well, I have. Most of the colors are dull looking, washed out, and not very realistic. But it's the "blondes" that really annoyed me. Most of them have a strange greenish tint to them that makes the character look as if they have stayed in the swimming pool for too long. You'd think that they would have done better in a game where half the population is blonde! Well, I've finally corrected the situation, after many hours of testing and fiddling in the creation kit.

Nice stuff, very cool choice of colours.

PLEASE NOTE THE LINK TO THIS MOD INCLUDES ADULT CONTENT.

Sensin's Full Body Tattoos For CBBE Skin....Fair and Mature Skin.....

Download Link [www.nexusmods.com]

Full Body Tattoos Mod For CBBE Skin 3.1 + Fair Skin Complexion

If you are a Tattoo fan or think your Dragonborn isn't quite as mean looking as they could be this is the mod for you :)

Castles, Palaces, Mansions & Estates
PLEASE NOTE THE LINK TO THIS MOD INCLUDES ADULT CONTENT.

Sexy Mannequins SSE

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Sexy human mannequins to replace the dreary wooden ones. They will use whatever custom Male or Female models you have.

Finally, my female armor has the perfect place to be displayed instead of Mr Wooden McBoring :)

Clothing
Bandolier - Bags and Pouches Classic

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Adds lots of pouches, bags and bandoliers to help to ease your burden.

Practical and Stylish. What more could the veteran adventurer want?

Combat
VioLens - A Killmove Mod SE

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

VioLens - A Killmove Mod SE gives you in-game control over both Ranged and Melee Killmoves. Version 2.0+ provides more Killmove Customization than ever before, allowing you to pick which Killmoves you'd like to see trigger for each weapon type. Special Edition is configured via a Book Menu, the book is automatically added to your inventory.

Really easy to use mod that lets you alter all aspects of when and how kill moves will trigger. I have already seen more variety in a couple of hours than all my previous hours of triggering kill moves without this mod.

Environmental
Realistic Water Two

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

One of the many upgrades to Skyrim Special Edition is the new water flow system that allows water to bend around turns and change speed depending on the environment. While the water is much improved over the original edition of Skyrim, water flow was applied to most bodies of water indiscriminately resulting in odd looking water at times. With this mod, lake, pond/marsh, river and ocean water are once again visually and aurally distinct from one another.

Water never looked so.. wet :)

True Storms Special Edition - Thunder Rain and Weather Redone

Download Link [www.nexusmods.com]

True Storms Special Edition is a complete overhaul of the storm systems in Skyrim SE, including new heavy and unique weathers, loads of new intense sound effects, interior sounds, particle effects, new rain, snow, and dust textures, heavy fogs, new weathers for Solstheim including dust storms, and much more.

The Thunderstorms are brilliant and I especially like all the Dust particles and storms added to Solstheim. Tramping through the Snow near Winterhold actually made me feel like shivering with the new snow mechanics.
Followers and Companions
The Huntress Reborn - Aela replacer and Eleanor Follower by Plooshy - Ported to SSE by bchick3

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

From the Author: This is my take on Aela the Huntress. I love Aela, but her vanilla face is horrible. There are a couple of replacers out there that remedy this but I've never particularly liked any of them. So I made one myself. :)

A really nice version of Aela, I always thought she looked a bit stern :)

Gameplay, Effects & Changes
Alternate Start - Live another life

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Live Another Life provides an alternative means to start the game for those who do not wish to go through the lengthy intro sequence at Helgen. You will be given the opportunity to choose your race and then choose a new life for your character to lead. A wide variety of choices will be available. What you choose will have a lasting impact, so choose carefully or the gods may forsake you again!

Pretty much a standard mod for those of who are on a new playthrough. As much as I enjoy the opening sequence I really don't want to go through it again and again.

Cutting Room Floor

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

From the depths of the ether, or just the cutting room floor, comes forth several NPCs, some quests, and other miscellaneous content which was created but never implemented in the game. If ever you had the feeling that Skyrim was missing something, you were probably right! This mod should relieve a bit of that. Villages that were supposed to exist have been brought back. Quests that were partially implemented have been completed. Various items have been restored that were still in the data files. NPCs have been brought back to the game and given homes where appropriate. Plus plenty of other random bits of stuff that was mentioned in the game but didn't exist yet.

Follower Trap Safety

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

From The Author: If you ever hated followers and summoned creatures for triggering traps, getting both of you into a tight situation or you were trying to guide them around the pressure plates, then this mod is for you.
This mod changes few base scripts and as a result, your followers and summoned creatures should no longer trigger bear traps, pressure plates and trip wires. Enjoy!

KER-CHUNK, OW, OW ... "Don't worry it's nothing` be gone!

Simple Face to Face Conversation - REQUIRES SKSE64

Download Link [www.nexusmods.com]

An SKSE64 plugin that automatically switches to first-person view and smoothly zooms up with cool lock-on feature when talking. That's it.

What it says on the tin.

Immersion
Even Better Quest Objectives - EBQO

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

This mod enhances the quest descriptions in the vanilla game so that you have a clear sense of where you are supposed to go and what you are supposed to do besides looking at the quest markers. Let's face it - the quest descriptions were quite bad, not specifying where you are supposed to go by themselves, and forcing you to play with the quest markers on all the time. This affects nearly 250 quest objectives/descriptions, spanning over 160 quests, editing descriptions that were either really vague or didn't exist at all.

A very nice mod. No more discarding quests becasue I have NO idea where to go, what to do or even who the heck I got the quest from !

Immersive Citizens - AI Overhaul SE

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Immersive Citizens - AI Overhaul is a mod whose purpose is to increase player in-game immersion by greatly improving Artificial Intelligence (AI) of friendly NPCs (citizens) in order to make them act and react like true humans in relation to their environment or to an aggressor.

This is a very subtle mod as it just makes things seem a tad more `realistic` without being all bells and whistles.

Immersive Wenches

Download LInk[www.nexusmods.com]

Adds wenches to every inn in Skyrim to "serve and chat" with the patrons of an inn using custom scenes, adds barmaids that work as servers/innkeepers and maid wenches with a bodyguard that travel around Skyrim. They can be turned into followers (they have custom spells/perks/classes/AI) and can be spouses.

Who doesn't want wenches in Bars?
Landscape
Vivid Landscapes - All in One - Special Edition

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

From The Author :

Hey fellows!

Finally, I found the time to adapt my old Skyrim stuff for the Special Edition.

Took a lot longer than anticipated but it was surely worth it...
editing the texture from the base by using new techniques to enhance quality and sharpness
made them look so good that I have to update my old Skyrim mods as well ;)

btw...
you won't experience a performance drop while using this mod, actually, you should gain some fps in many areas... lol

have fun playing!

The biggest change I have noticed is when exploring caves and Draugr Ruins. They look SO much better with lots of subtle detail that just makes them feel much more immersive

Models and Textures
Monster Eyes

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

A very small mod. Adds new 21 standalone eyes for ALL RACES (both gender).
Known Issues: If you use ENB - eyes can be brighter or darker.

A nice selection of eyes for those who want a touch of the supernatural to their DragonBorn.
Overhauls
Moonlight Tales Special Edition - Werewolf and Werebear Overhaul

https://youtu.be/ae1cQE2zr8g

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Moonlight Tales Special Edition is a complete werewolf gameplay overhaul including: lunar transformations, completely new perk tree with 32 unique perks, innovative roaring system, skin system, werebears, moon howling and revert form, werewolf looting and interactions, extensive human form powers, custom animations, sound effects and more!

Wow, just wow. Ripping off peoples Faces has never been so much fun >:)

Player Houses
Adventurer's Basement - BHM

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Adventurer's Basement adds a linked basement to each of the Vanilla, Hearthfire and Dragonborn player houses. The primary purpose of this basement is to automatically sort all crafting materials, food, ingredients and potions in the player's inventory and display them throughout the basement as individual physical items. The basement also contains the full suite of crafting, improving and enchanting appliances.

An excellent mod to make your crafting life SO much easier.

Leaf Rest - SSE

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

An interactive & customizable home located in the town of Riverwood. It contains a full forge & crafting area, along with some unique features including an interactive gardening system, a wood burning fireplace, quick access bookshelves, business ledger trading system, & more. The entrance faces towards the west, overlooking the river.

Totally stunning. Hot tub? Check Auto Storage? Check. Amazing Stuff !!

Unlimited Bookshelves

Download lInk[www.nexusmods.com]

How would you like to be able to use the WHOLE shelf to fill with books until they are packed so tight there's literally no space left?
Or use your bookshelves to display other items, whether alchemy ingredients so they are within easy reach, or rare items so you can show off?

With the updated bookshelf script written by da5id2701, you can now store up to 128 books or other objects on any bookshelves using the vanilla bookshelf activator, allowing for much more storage of books in library rooms or various other displays. There is now enough room in all of the vanilla houses to store one copy of every book from the vanilla game and even more. Don't worry about what may or may not fit, just shove everything in and anything that doesn't fit will be automatically returned to you.

A total godsend. `Full` bookshelves look so silly with half of the books falling over and looking all wonky!

Severin Manor

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Features

Doors that will close themselves
Portals to the other 5 player houses* (excluded Hearthfire houses)
A teleport spell to return to Severin Manor
Labeled safe storage in one form or another:

V1.2 has labelled chests.
V2.1 has auto-sorting storage thanks to General Stores

The remodel comes in two flavours. One without auto-sorting storage, and one with. Aside from that, they are now, as of this
update, about the same in appearance.
There are also two versions of each version! One version of each will have the closing doors and portals, and the other version of each will not. Gotta have options! Some people may not want to teleport around or watch doors mysteriously close!

A really nice remodel, so less dreary than the Vanilla version.

Quests and Adventures
Amorous Adventures

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Fully voiced dialogue and immersive romance type quests with vanilla Skyrim NPCs. A bit of adventure, romance and occasionally romantic comedy while exploring the vanilla NPC's backstories more.

Good fun mod :)

Legacy of the Dragonborn SSE

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Legacy of the Dragonborn is a DLC sized expansion which centres around your own personal museum in Solitude. Offering dozens of new fully voice acted quests, hundreds of new items, a completely new guild and MUCH more.

I have only just started to scratch the surface of this mod. Truly amazing stuff :) The perfect place to satisfy my pack mule like tendencies.
User Interface
Better MessageBox Controls

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Navigate all message boxes with the Left/Right and Activate (E) keys. Also fixes the clickable area of buttons so they are easier to select with the mouse.

Much easier to navigate multiple choices. Good Stuff :P

Lore-Based Loading Screens

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Adds 160+ new loading screens steeped in Tamrielic Lore. Become deeper immersed in the Elder Scrolls mythos with tons of quotes from in-game books (from Skyrim and past Elder Scrolls titles), history, mythology, and little-known facts about the world of Tamriel.

Sky UI - REQUIRES SKSE64

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Elegant, PC-friendly interface mod with many advanced features.

The premier redesign of the UI for a good reason. Much more intuitive than the vanilla setup.

Valdacil's Item Sorting

Download LInk[www.nexusmods.com]

From the Author: The goal is to make finding specific items (especially frequently used items) easier by renaming them so they group together. All other sorting mods I've seen for Skyrim rename some items so they group together, but those are still mixed in together. For instance, Hide: and Pelt:, but there are still a bunch of other items in between. Or rearranging food items so they group with similar food items, but when looking at the All tab of inventory or container, those items are mixed in amongst other items.

A really useful mod that makes finding stuff so much easier :)
Utilities
BodySlide and Outfit Studio

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

An easy to use tool for customizing bodies and outfits, creating new bodies and outfits, and converting outfits between body types.

Pretty much standard if you use CBBE.

LOOT - Load Order Optimisation Tool

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

Setting the right load order for your mods is a crucial step to enjoying a stable modded game. The Load Order Optimisation Tool (LOOT) can help with that, by providing automated load order sorting that's simple to use and fully customisable.

A very handy little program that helps make sure all is running fine and dandy with your dozens (hundreds?) of mods :)

Weapons & Armor
The Batcave Reborn

Download Link[www.nexusmods.com]

I am vengeance I am the night I am Batman!

Probably not Lore Friendly but IDC. Amazing mod :P

Witchblade Armor and Weapons

Download LInk[www.nexusmods.com]

Adds a complete weapon and jewellery set, partial armor set, and a spell.

Got to love purple :P
Work In progress
My philosophy on adding mods is to add a few at a time as I think about features that would be handy to have in the game. I have been adding a few at a time in the hopes that if one is game breaking then I can disable it and roll back to my last save.

I have often seen comments that some people have 200+ mods with no issues or the old maxim of `mod it until it breaks`. Personally, I am a little more cautious.

As I test more mods I will be adding them to this guide so keep an eye out.

Laters

Monkeydude

Please note: If you are wondering where the Ambriel Quest went. I REALLY liked it, but sadly on the final fight, I kept getting a CTD and also encountered quite a few quest and immersion breaking bugs. I will keep an eye on it and if there are updates or fixes I may include it again.

i would very much recommend sounds of skyrim... https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/8286?tab=description
adds a bunch of new atmospheric sounds, like birds and insects in the wilds.. undead howling and moans in dungeons... etc. it sounds really simple, but it adds SO MUCH immersion it's unbelievable.

for the thieves guild quests: all thieves guild jobs concurrently.. simply allows you to take one of all 7 job categories at once, which i really think it should always have been.

Moon and star mod. Just Moon and Star. A stranger out of Morrowind, complete voice acting, a new town built over the lake near Riverwood, the feeling of past and present colliding... Moon and Star is great.
