Regardless of the animation/color/design, this mechanics offers depth GRIP doesn't have.
Before anyone screams at the "complexity", hear this fact:
Lego Racer had 3 levels of stacking back in the days and it was designed for children back in 99.

  • notice how it was possible to upgrade either firestorm OR aegis = consequencefull choice
  • notice how everything is understandable without any "arrows" or "text" or "tutorial"
Would be a 1st step towards curing GRIP's current weaknesses:
  • meaningful choices and
  • lasting stakes

The white blocks in Lego Racers were a multiplier, one green block + 3 white ones = warp speed. It worked because you didn't drive as fast as you do in Grip, another reason it worked was because the blocks you could pick up was coloured, no random selector like in Grip. I don't see it working without giving an individual colour to boost, rockets, shield, etc.
