Lord knows I really tried to get into this game. Loads of hours watching on youtube, looking at the wiki and guides on steam, and just playing the game. But after experiencing a lot of what the game has to offer, it really just bores me, especially in comparison to other survival games. I think what it comes down to is the lack of feeling meaningful progression throughout the hours and hours of play.

While other survival games start you in similar positions in terms of capabilities, walking around, beating things with sharp sticks, etc. But what it comes down to, however are other survival games making you feel much more powerful by giving you new powers and abilities. Take Minecraft and Terraria: by the end, your weapons are capable of insane feats like firing explosives or hundreds of bullets in a second. Compare that to DST, in which endgame weapons really only deal more damage. Maybe they can freeze or burn enemies for pitiful amounts of damage, but at the end of the day you will need to hit whatever you are fighting with a slightly sharper stick than what you had at the start. For another comparison, take the movement capabilities of each game. Again, while all start with you simply walking around, by the end, in Minecraft and Terraria, you are flying around and teleporting all over the place. In this game, you walk slightly faster. Maybe you teleport ten times before you have to make another staff.

And don't even get me started on the bosses. So many bosses share so many issues. Most of them either have ridiculous amounts of health to the point of needing THIRTY MINUTES AT LEAST to kill (misery toadstool), have unavoidable damage that just needs to be sponged (queen bee, 2/3 of the final shadow pieces, fuelweaver), or are just plain samey and plain (moose/goose, deerclops, bearger, etc.). Not to mention the best way to kill many of them is just to cheese them with the pan flute, which is a boring design choice in and of itself. It's telling that one of the bosses that the community considers to be amazingly designed is just the most simple boss from another game (Eye of Terror). This whole issue compounds itself with the lack of flashy or fun weaponry to create a vortex of utter boredom.

All in all, there's a lot to love about this game. The artstyle, music, and cast of fun characters are all great, but with hardly any fun gameplay to back it up, what's really the point? Once again, I really did try to love this game, but unfortunately I can't recommend it to anyone who owns Minecraft or Terraria. You aren't missing out on much, trust me.
