edit: i think i reviewed this game too early. the story is 10/10, genuinely. and levelling becomes much less of a problem with the cores you acquire/craft yourself. overall i really enjoyed this game and i highly recommend

if you're looking for a pokemon clone, this honestly isn't a bad one. the creature designs are good, the story is interesting with some humour sprinkled in. the battle system is extremely simplistic which i feel isn't necessarily good or bad, but it does make the game more accessible and less frustrating.

however, i do feel like there are needlessly frustrating elements to the game. one of them being how slow it is to level up your nexomon. within the 14 hours i've played so far, my nexomon are only really averaging around level 26 or 27 or so. another frustrating thing is that, when your party faints, you teleport to the last place you healed... with half of your nexomon's health remaining. why not just have the nexomon restored to full health? it's extra steps that don't make the game more challenging, but more time consuming over the course of a playthrough and mildly infuriating.

overall, i think it's an enjoyable pokemon clone with an appealing art style, pretty decent designs and a fun story. i also think it's nice to have the choice of what to do next, as you can select quests depending on what you feel like doing, something that i feel pokemon doesn't really have. the main cons are only really things that are mildly frustrating and don't totally ruin your experience, as long as you don't mind some grinding and travelling back and forth between places.

i am normally someone who values gameplay a lot, which in this game, is sort of lacking. but is that a bad thing? not in the slightest. i enjoy the little bit of choice you have in the game, from deciding who you hang out with to which songs to practice, and for a game like this, it just works. as for the storyline? ngl it hits home, and mae is probably the most relatable character i've seen in any videogame i've played. it feels realistic yet.. fantastical at the same time and i wish i could wipe my memory and replay this game for every little unpredictable thing that pops up as you progress through the game. amazing game, made me cry a couple times
