Click to 10

Funl and Cheman's, indie-styled video game: Click to 10, is one of the most innovative video games of the twenty-first century, if not the most innovative video game of all time. Although the plot and story of the game may be quite simple, that doesn’t make it a bad game; rather, it made the game’s story compelling to its audience. Not only does it have an fascinating story, but the game comes at a great and appealing price: free! There are many factors as to why this video game should be nominated as 2022’s Game of the Year. Step aside Stray, Elden Ring, and other AAA games, because Click to 10 is here to claim its throne.

First, let’s discuss the graphics. The astounding choice of black text and gray background really makes the colors pop out at the audience, not only that, the graphics itself is really smooth. The numbers seem to be of the “Arial” font; keeping things nice and simple for everyone to enjoy. Graphics don't just make a game look nice, but the character’s designs as well! Numbers 0, 1, and 9 have marvelous character designs, so do the other numbers, but 0, 1, and 9’s stand out the most in my opinion. The shocking choices for the character’s designs, the colors chosen to represent the world of Click to 10, the simplicity of the graphics, there’s just so much that the game offers to the people that might be discovered later in the lore.

Next, music also makes a game whole. Although the game may not have any music, the game’s page on the Steam website/app has a preview of said game. The preview’s choice for music really speaks to you on a whole different level. The clash between vocal acapella shows that there is an internal struggle between characters, a feud that shouldn’t go dismissed, more on that later. As the preview comes to an end, the music slowly fades out around the number 7 to the sound of a mouse clicking. I believe that the clicking is supposed to represent an extraterrestrial struggle between the videogame’s main character, 3, and his external struggles in his life, for the game is pretty unforgiving when it comes to mistakes and failures. I do have to give props to the developer for being self aware as to how difficult the game is; the challenge is very much appreciated in the community and we couldn’t have asked for more.

Finally, the story between the numbers is quite intriguing and emotional. As mentioned before, the music really accompanies the story of the game. The struggle between characters is apparent. Numbers 1 and 2 losing their lives to number 0 leaving their sons, numbers 3 and 4 to work together, but in due time, 3 and 4 come to a realization that their brotherly rivalry has finally come to a choke-hold and that one has to make a final move in order to progress on with their lives. 4 chooses to lead a life of power and prejudice, casting aside his former family and his only brother, whereas 3 chooses to embrace his family’s tradition and heritage and continue to live on as a number. The siblings split and lead their own ways in life. 4 walks the path of perpetual torment, leaving chaos wherever he goes and 3 makes new friends along the way such as 5 and eventually 6. Decades go by and 3 finally reunites with 4, but 4 is no longer the man that 3 once knew, the brothers duel it out and 3 comes out victorious, although he may have slain his own brother for the good of number-kind, he cherishes the remaining moments he had with him during the fight and honors his brother’s life by combining himself with his brother’s soul to become 7. This links up with the trailer’s music as when the music finally comes to an end, the music stops on the number 7, signaling that 3’s journey has finally come to its end and now he must renew himself in a different life, a different number. As 7, 7 finds his way into 0’s domain and comes across 0’s underlings, 8 and 9. The two give 7 a well-fought battle, but 7 powers through them nonetheless. Those who stand in 7’s way are quickly disposed of, not until 0 finally shows himself once again. 7 is enraged, remembering what 0 did to his family and what he took from him long ago. 7 fights desperately to defeat 0, but 0 is simply just too strong. Just when 7 was about to give up, the inner 3 within him motivates him to keep fighting and push on. With newfound determination, 7 combines the power of his inner 3 and becomes 10, slaying the beast known as 0 once and for all. The story that builds up to the number 10 is quite the tear jerker and the music finally comes to a stop and all we, the audience, can hear is the sound of our mouse clicking, showing that the story/game has already come to an end; just like in the trailer.

I really hope that more people continue to find out about this gem of a game and that it helps boost the population of Click to 10’s fanbase. The symbolism between the story and the music is unearthly, the gameplay and plot is innovative when it comes to creating new stories, and the game is amazing in general; the perfect combination of gameplay, story, and music; the game literally becomes a playable cinematic masterpiece. If you happen to come across this review, I surely hope that you enjoyed this game as much as I did.
