TL;DR: good game, insanely unfriendly community, iffy monetization making it very unfair for new players

This review won't talk about balancing, more about the experience. If you want to know about balance, there are multiple youtubers to refer to, as well as the subreddit. I don't entirely recommend reading reviews to learn about balance, as biases are more than often present

i've been following this game for a long time. and i mean a long time. i've been watching otzdarva and other content creators ever since around pigs release. watching the game is great, but i never really felt inclined to get into it. until about a couple of days ago, when i finally got around to really trying it, and it has been a pretty bad experience. starting the game as a survivor feels very, very rough, especially since i happened to start right on 13, which might have influenced the skill levels i was queued with. out of 7 matches, i barely moved up 2 pips. which yes, 90% of it was my fault,. i know the theory, having watched so much content around the game, but putting it into practice is another thing entirely. but the post game chat just completely discouraged me from even trying. the amount of ♥♥♥♥ talk and post game witch hunts is insane. in those 7 mentioned games i got added by 3 other people to pick on my skills and to just not play anymore.

i then tried killer. i always thought id like playing killer, and i was right. it feels amazing, up until it doesn't. the first few games were fairly ok, even getting 4 kills at one point. dealing with trash talk then is a little easier, but even getting picked on for giving hatch to a survivor you enjoyed playing against is insane. but then i just hit a wall. game after game of getting no hooks, 2 gens left and survivors teabagging at every turn. i will admit, i let bm-ing get to me too easily, but the trash talk in the after game lobby sealed the deal for me. players with 1000+ hours bashing me for the perks i used, for the bad mindgames, for the missed hits, close to everything. it felt as if i was punished for having a couple of good introductory games, getting a big rank increase and landing me in games with massive experience deficits. i like the game, i really do, but the community makes it very bad to get into imo. if i return, i will update the review, but until then i dont really recommend it due how miserable the beginner experience is, solely due to the toxicity of the community, which makes it hard to even begin to improve at the game

and as a final point, the monetization is very, very unfriendly for beginners. the sheer amount of skills you do not have access to is insane, and it limits you GREATLY. while an argument can be made that "it is intentional to prevent choice paralysis", i disagree. the baseline perks are just miserable most of the time, with the outdated design philosophy from release, which was more "hide and seek" rather than the chase oriented current game. this makes it hard to get anywhere without paying, or grinding beyond reason to unlock with ingame currency (not to mention that you can't acquire licensed content at all without paying, which would be understandable were it not for my next point). when looking to get into the game, more often than not you'll get someone say "just buy it with X bundle", to get more perks and for the killer, or "just get the ultimate edition" to get a bigger baseline rooster of characters. which is unjustifiable considering the monetization model is the one of a F2P game, using battlepasses, half the content being paid dlc, and cosmetics shop, while being a priced game. for the sake of keeping this review short, i will link another youtube video, which goes a lot more in depth on this topic.
