I highly advise messing with unorthadox or otherwise-seemingly-ineffective builds at least up until champion. Some characters can be very effective when played 'wrong'. It's also fun to max out each character. If your only goal is to 'get bigger numbers' you can do that, but a love of the minute-to-minute gameplay is what makes the spent time enjoyable - even more so if you keep in touch with players you encounter. - The DLC is well worth the money spent, as it expands the already-expansive base game significantly.
