I want to like this game but it has one critical flaw above all others for me.

I live in a rural area with NO good internet options, and the only one I have available at my home is very slow, and this game has so many redundant, unnecessary server calls that the game is borderline unplayable at the best of times, and that's if I'm during the rare moment that I'm not getting only half of my advertised speed.

Until they optimize the netcode I literally cannot play.

As of January 9th, 2024, Eleon has partnered with Funcom, a publisher with a mixed history for games they work with, Eleon has started blanket censoring the forums of any discussion regarding Funcom. Thread are being moved to Off Topic, locked, and deleted without any word of warning or reason given. This is entirely unacceptable and reflects extremely poorly on the future of this game, to say nothing of the fact what was originally meant to be a free update was turned into a DLC in the same announcement as the partnership.

Eleon, I've loved your game for years and defended many of your missteps over the years, but you've ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up here.

EDIT ONE: I have been given a formal warning by a DEVELOPER for calling out the censorship. https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/584478419220299787/1194387072346234901/eleoncorruption.PNG?ex=65b02aa4&is=659db5a4&hm=237983d69e6465e47c571b58a3d750ed1202617b95909d6fa0e99aae54e0eb8e&

EDIT TWO: RIGHT ON CUE: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/584478419220299787/1194387415679389756/eleoncorruption2.PNG?ex=65b02af6&is=659db5f6&hm=7d091f996a937e8bff01db5124a41e993e790d9b1cc7a7e233344091b9a56efe&

TF2 is a game I have played for over ten years. I joined late 2013 and saw the wonderful time that was Love And War. TF2 is where I met some of my best friends, had my greatest gaming memories, and helped me get through my hardest times.

So why am I rating it negatively?

For FIVE YEARS+ now, the game has been overwhelmed by crude AI fueled with basic navmeshes and aimbots. They swarm official servers and instakill everyone they see on the other team. This is on nearly every official server. If there aren't bots in your server, both teams are speedrunning the round to try to get one full round without bots, leading to sweatswamps where no-one is having fun. And that's if you're lucky enough to not get multiple bots joining during the match.

Bots run in groups typically, in parties of up to 6, meaning they CANNOT BE VOTEKICKED. All it takes is the bots auto-voting against a player and ONE OR TWO HUMANS FALLING FOR IT for the bots to have a vote-kickable majority to remove ALL HUMAN PLAYERS FROM THEIR TEAM.

This problem has been going on en masse for HALF A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ DECADE.

So what has Valve done about it? Not much. The only changes they made were incidental and often a net negative. They removed text and voice chat from Free To Play users, REMOVING THEIR ABILITY TO EVEN CALL FOR A MEDIC. One of the only positives Valve has done was allowing both teams to votekick simultaneously, which was a bare-minimum bandaid fix on a broken bone. Any other "fixes" to bots were accidental, such as the 64-bit update breaking the code for bots, which only lasted a few days before the bots were back in force.

Bot hosters have been threatening users, DDoSing services, impersonating community figures, and holding the game at ransom BY "SELLING" BOT IMMUNITY, WHICH IS MOST LIKELY A SCAM.

Valve has done almost nothing to fix this, and the one time they barely acknowledged it was TWO YEARS AGO when #SaveTF2 got to GLOBAL TRENDING ON TWITTER. We got ONE tweet in response and then Valve left us on read and has done nothing since to fix the problem.

This can be expected since TF2 is 17 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ years old, but Valve still updates the game with new maps, and mainly, LOOTBOX MICROTRANSACTIONS. Valve is still actively monetizing the game to this day while they KNOW this problem is going on and the game is completely unplayable on official servers.

So why not play community servers then?

I do not like modified TF2 content. Almost all community servers run the same map 24/7, disable random bullet spread/random crits, apply class limits, or are a custom community gamemode that is not the vanilla experience. Vanilla servers are buried under HUNDREDS of gimmick servers, making them hard to find and harder to populate. Sure, UncleTopia are populated, but they are MODIFIED SERVERS, and I like the chaotic state of vanilla, getting hit by a crocket from the other side of the map included.

Currently, there is a petition on save(dot)tf (valve removes the direct link, ffs). It has over 157 THOUSAND SIGNATURES SO FAR. Every name, whether real name or your IGN or an internet alias will be printed out and physically sent to Valve HQ. It takes seconds to sign and though I'm quite skeptical about the #FixTF2 movement, it's better than letting this game rot. Along with this petition, Youtubers, players, and fans of the shorts have got Valve, #FixTF2, and #SaveTF2 trending on twitter at the time of this review, and nearly every major community figure has posted a social media post, YouTube Video, or are currently livestreaming about the community event.

It is utterly unacceptable that Valve continues to monetize this game while their OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED GAMEMODES are completely unplayable.

I would rather that Valve give up and shut down all official servers than leave the game in this limbo and just tell us to go home, we had a good run.

♥♥♥♥ the bot hosters and ♥♥♥♥ Valve for leaving the game like this while still milking money out of people with gambling addictions through their lootbox economy.
