Tf2 is undoubtedly one of the best FPS games out there. The whole thing about it being a hat simulator isn't completely untrue, but it doesn't detract at all from the gameplay. The teams are meant to be even, and they are, most of the time. Newbies have several things to do when they first join, including training modes which aren't too easy, and a method for requesting a coach. Everyone should play this.
