I wanted to start this review by saying I am a huge fan of Remnant 2 as I was from the Ashes.

I also wanted to start by saying that yes this review will be marked as recommended, however it will be extremely critical because there was a lot of things about The Awakened King that I disliked that I hope the developers will address in future DLCs.

I will ignore bugs and performance issues for now as the developers have done a fantastic job throughout the life of Remnant 2 with supporting the game and quickly issuing patches.

My biggest criticism with this DLC is simply the fact of how low effort it feels and how much of it was recycled content. For starters, reusing Losomn felt very boring, with some areas of the map literally feeling like a complete copy and paste. My friend and I commented several times, especially in the castle, that certain rooms literally appeared to be unchanged from parts of the base game version of Losomn. One of my biggest complaints with the base game is the locations felt somewhat limited compared to From the Ashes, I had really hoped that the DLC would bring entirely new locations to the game, similar to how Swamps of Corsus and Subject 2923 did in the original entry.

While there are a few new enemy types thrown in, for the most part most of the enemies that you will fight in this DLC will be same as what you did in the base game Losomn. However, this is not where my problem with the recycling ends. The Awakened King does add some new elite enemies to the mix which are a good addition and add some flavor to the game. The problem however, is that every single boss in the DLC, with the exception of The One True King, is literally just one of the normal elite enemies turned into a boss by giving it more health and 1-2 new attacks. This makes the boss fight feel extremely uninteresting due to the fact that you are already used to these enemies and know almost all of their attacks from the get go which removes much of the challenge.

And speaking of challenge, let's talk about The One True King. To preface this you are given the option to fight both Nimue and The One True King, my friend and I decided to spare Nimue and just fight the king. My problem is that The One True King for being the final boss of this DLC was ridiculously easy. Despite my complaints with the other bosses in the DLC being recycled, during my play through we did die at least once to every boss as it usually pretty typical when you are getting a feel for them and how to navigate the fight arena. Fighting The One True King we beat him in probably 3min on the first attempt without either player even coming close to being downed once. I legitimately think he is one of the easiest bosses in the entire game period. There were numerous times we died to common enemies simply playing the DLC. The final boss of the entire DLC I don't feel like should be something an average player can wipe on the first attempt without even breaking a sweat.

As for other thoughts the new Archetype seems fun, however the DLC is not long enough to come even close to ranking it more than 3-4 levels so I still need to play more to fully comment about it. I also felt like there being only one real map puzzle that I could find being a little underwhelming.

Overall, The Awakened King was an enjoyable 4 hour adventure, however one that was underwhelming. I find the amount of recycled content to really pull away from the variety of the expansion and prevents it from feeling truly new and fresh content. I know the developers have said that there will be 3 expansions, to me this seems pretty clear that this means that the other two will be in Yaesha and N'Erud as those are the other two primary locations in the game. I strongly urge the developers to reconsider if possible and instead give us a new and truly unique locations. And at the very least, make unique bosses and not simply recycle elites as bosses.

As a $10 4ish hour expansion I think that it is pretty fair and if you are a fan of the game I think you will enjoy it, but I won't lie and fully admit that I was expecting a lot more.
