Welp...I just finished this game playing as a female princeps. I'll cut it short before going into detail - I'll give this a solid 8/10. Amazing scenario, great soundtrack and so on.

Now, for the details:

PROS:

+The scenario is very well-written with many twists&turns and interactive characters. Especially as a history nerd, the excellent portrayal of Roman politics AND your ability to influence them is fantastic. In many games set in historical periods, the sexist, classist and racist attitudes of the time are not represented. Expeditions: Rome DOES show those attitudes, but not in a way that would severely impede gameplay.
+The tactical combat system is fairly well - I do have certain critical points about them, which I'll detail down below. The tooltips are clear and informative, and the armor system is not too overpowered.
+Artistic freedom. What else can I say? You can personalize your character in depth, ranging from hair color to preferred weapon to whether he or she prefers logic over emotion and whatnot.
+Diverse set of core characters with deep personalities. Bestia Tabat is my personal favorite, though.

CONS:

-The dialogue is a bit weirdly-written at times, it can get quite hard to understand the context and what exactly is being said. As much as it pains me to say, the dialogue for enemy NPC's in combat is downright horrible - Gallic warriors can utter comic book phrases like "Let us defend our land!" while Egyptians babble about Ra and whatnot.
-I do wish there was voice acting for the player character, it felt a bit empty.
-The "sneaky" classes are downright overpowered - they can go invisible even if they are on fire or covered with oil, and you cannot target them unless you're standing right next to them. A possible suggestion is making status effects like bleeding, wet, burning, et cetera make them unable to turn invisible. Alternatively their movement could be limited.

Overall, not perfect but a solid game. Highly recommended if you're into Ancient Rome, RPG or both, and even if you're not this game is sure to gain your interest.

As a longtime Paradox fan, I was initially concerned about CKIII, as CKII was quite limited without DLC and the release of Imperator was a debacle.

I'm glad to say that my concerns were unfounded. Even in this early stage; with few mods and DLC, it is quite fun to play. I especially like the options to start as any ruler, unlike CK2 which limited the player to Christians without DLC.

Right now it does not outshine CK2, but I have great hopes for CKIII's future. A 9/10 from me.
