Don't take the low rating for this game at face value!

There have been some complaints about the difficulty and balancing of this game, causing people to downvote it, but after winning a run after only 4 hours of play time, I can confidently say that it is not more difficult than any other game in the genre, and I honestly don't know why so many people reacted the way they did.

Deckbuilder roguelites are intended to be challenging, and this one does a great job of keeping things fresh with new and interesting mechanics that really make you think about dynamic positioning of your units and whether or not they should even be on the field at all (you can recall units to heal them and avoid attacks, then replay them later).

What really drew me to this game is the beautiful art style and music. This game is extremely charming and doesn't deserve to be left at the bottom of the steam bargain bin because it's "unbalanced".

Edit: I still wholeheartedly recommend this game after 40 hours of play time and getting all the achievements :)

Take my review with a grain of salt, as I didn't finish chapter 1.

The game is cute, has great music and a fun battle system, but really fails at level design. Every area I've seen just feels like you're walking aimlessly through a bunch of corridors constructed with little rhyme or reason, with collectibles and enemies haphazardly scattered about. There were far too many combat encounters for my liking; even with the good battle system I spent 70% of my time in battle, which makes it hard to progress through the story at a decent pace.

This game feels like it has really solid building blocks in place, but just didn't know how to assemble them.

I like Rivals more than I do smash, which I say as someone with thousands of hours in it.

Aside from having gorgeous pixel art and an amazing workshop modding community, what Rivals really gets right is having characters with abilities that synergise with each other.

For example, the first character I picked up when I played the game was Orcane. He can create puddles, which he can then activate as traps, teleport to, or use to power up his other moves. All of his specials are focused around and utilise his main mechanic, which feels incredibly cool.

When characters are built around a strong mechanical core instead of paying homage to the game they're from, it lets rivals characters really get to the heart of what is fun about platform fighters.

If you like smash, buy this game.

The OG one person passion project. Full of secrets, fun weapons and charm, with engaging platforming and combat.

If you like the first two Paper Mario games, you OWE it to yourself to play this spiritual successor. It has a great world, story and characters, and manages to innovate the formula in genuinely good ways.

There are two kinds of runs in the Binding of Isaac.

You have runs that are fun but challenging, making it hard to stay alive, but then you also have runs where you can't even see the enemies because you're shooting so many tears and they're splitting and shooting lightning and turning into laser beams and shooting other tears and bouncing off the walls...

The Binding of Isaac makes it fun to be overpowered, but even when that doesn't happen it's still a great game.

Baba is you is too hard for me and that's okay.

I managed to get up to the 'end' of the game, but doing more levels after that was honestly too much for me. That doesn't change the fact that this is one of the most innovative, imaginative and well thought-out games I've ever played.

Pokemon but the mechanics are better thought out, it looks nicer, made by an indie team.

If you like feeling good about typing in the names of countries and clicking on their flags then this game is for you. Not a huge amount of depth but I like learning something new. Still working on the capital cities.

This is probably one of my favourite games of all time. It's hilarious, and gives a few hours of play time. In all, its a great game.
