This game is a joke, being a parody of Final Fantasy,
BUT
It's not a joke.

Not only does this include a difficulty system that actually tells you everything major that changes (Besides things like the Bomb Slimes and Purple Squids entering battle with nine poison stacks on Epic) but the game is still reasonably difficult without putting it on Epic, unless you're so used to Epic that in your second playthrough on on a sequential save half of the enemies one-shotting you in the power plant due to you being two levels underleveled feels normal. My first experience with Epic was nearly getting killed on the first battle in the game, gg. What truly makes this game difficult is Epic is insanely hard, but you can adapt to it. You can get hit by the enemies and survive, and most things that the enemies can do aren't out of your power, unlike a lot of games you see today. It puts the player and the enemies on nearly equal ground, but manages to still keep the game reasonably difficult. That is a sign that the game's difficulty is well designed.

This game contains parodic references to almost every game in the book that your childhood was composed of. My favorite cluster of references is the graveyard in Graybone Cemetery, there are many tombstones on one screen, a few of them are damaged, but the ones that aren't contain jokes that are mostly references of some sort. This is only a pinch of what is included in the actual game, though.

The dialogue in this game somehow keeps a decent balance between "Absolutely hilarious and cannot be taken seriously" and "Deep storyline" despite the final boss being *SPOILER* a cat god.
I think my favorite thing about the dialogue in this game is either the fact that there is a one-liner for nearly every skill in the game, or the fact that dialogue can randomly trigger when walking around the map, and these times it's at it's funniest. There is one cluster of dialogue where Lance is staring at highschoolers and Natalie calls him a pedophile. Another is a conversation between Matt and Lance where Matt seems to be trying to explain to Lance that despite all the cameras he apparently has in his posession that he uses to stalk Natalie, it's still stalking and over the top stalking at that. The items even get some of this amazing humor, every one having a one-liner for a description. Achievements even get thrown into this bucket, there is one that nearly everyone knows about for clicking Natalie's boobs.

The only negative that comes to mind is the lack of an optimized full screen resolution and no access to STEAM features ingame, besides syncing, achievements, and cards. However this is understandable for a game ported from flash.

There isn't much to say about art style, it's not super duper flashy, and it definitely doesn't try to be edgy. It just tries to be cartoonish, cute, and funny, as it should.

I can't say much about the music, purely because music is almost never my main focus. Although I can say the music is definitely catchy and worth listening too, HFX definitely did a good job in my opinion.

This game has very nice replayability too, but the story isn't really the strong suit. I personally replay for the comedy and the challenge, and I do NG+ to get gear and etc. I didn't grab the first time around.

Overall, Matt deserves much more attention than he gets, but should never stop being a semi-solo developer. When you work with a lot of people and publishers, games like this are only dreams.

Early Access Review
Good game for early access, it's co-op, class specific, and running ahead just gets you killed. Left 4 Dead 2 but better, and more team oriented.
