Children of Morta was the first of my "12 Game in 12 Months (12 in 12)" for 2021. I started in late December and finished in early January, and it took me about 16 hours to beat. I got it in the December 2020 Humble Bundle and overall, I really liked the game. In terms of a game that draws you in immediately (games like that to me are Skyrim, Risk of Rain 2, and Jurassic World: Evolution), I wouldn't say it initially did that but it did start off with enough to keep me interested.

As for the story, it's nothing groundbreaking, but the best part of it is the heartwarming family dynamic and the stakes and connection you feel towards them. Even in a fantasy game with supernatural abilities, all the characters have relatable traits and flaws and feel remarkably human. The family interacting with each other and understanding their environment was the best part of the story.

As for the gameplay, this was by far my favorite feature. Each character is remarkably unique and with the runes and divine items later in the store, builds and kits for characters are very fun to try and pick up. My personal favorite characters were Linda, Joey, and Apan. It does really feel like the game is made for Linda, though. I just found she had the best abilities for all situations. The sub-environments within the 3 areas I felt lacked diversity, but the 3 areas themselves had enough hazard and enemy diversity for me. Also I felt a weird skill gap between the end of the first area and beginning of the second area. I was really struggling on the beginning of the second area for a long time, and I felt like I had to plunge a bunch of upgrades into the workshop and Book of Rea in order to finally finish that first area. After I beat that area, I beat every boss (except the final one) after that on the first try. It's just a really weird skill jump, but that was the only real problem I had.

As for graphics, I really don't care about them in most video games. I play games like Dawn of War Soulstorm without complaints all the time. But this game I really liked the pixel art style. It didn't feel minimalist like Minecraft and was really rather detailed and you could tell the art devs got what they were going for. I enjoyed the art style a lot.

Overall, I give Children of Morta a 9/10. Not a GOTY type of game, but a really good gem from indie developers that deserves a lot of praise.

I personally prefer this game over the other Microsoft RTS Games because it is more fast-paced and goes through all of human history. Nukes especially make this game fun, as do the variety of great civs. If you like Civilization V and other RTS games, this is like a combination of those and executed very well. 9/10
