Why do chairs have arms and legs if they can't walk or hold things?

Apparently, in our backwards prep-school society, women's rights are controversial. I understand that the statistics our club exposed (We put up posters with UN stats about income inequality, domestic violence, sexual assault, educational inequality ect.) were shocking. I know why some people would rather ignore the injustices in our society that don't affect them. I just find it a bit disheartening that the moment girls demand that members of our school acknowledge the disproportional challenges that women face, so many guys at my school freaked out. They assumed that because we want them to help fight this injustice, that we want to reverse the inequality and establish a matriarchy. Clearly, prep-school students have an inadequate exposure to feminism. In my two years at my school, I have not read a book written by a woman in English class, unless you count Grimms fairy tales, which were originally told by women. I heard rape jokes made about posters we made to educate people about the shocking reality of sexual violence. We were even criticized for giving money to an all girls school in Africa, because boys need education too. The purpose of our club is to advocate against discrimination and fight inequality, and the fact of the matter is that girls around the world are denied education. Our small contribution cannot even begin to level the playing field. I understand the importance of criticism and discussion, and I do think that there are countless ways could have improved our project, but we were not having the right conversations. Our club members ended up arguing with the people who still think "make me a sandwich" jokes are funny instead of having real, constructive conversations. Then maybe fewer high school boys would feel threatened by feminism, and understand that demanding equality isn't an attack on their "manhood." Maybe if we did not react so confrontationally to the sarcastic "I don't think women should have rights," that we hear at the back of the classroom, we could explain that we are not trying to blame all men for all of the injustices faced by women, that they are the combination of a history of oppression, cultural traditions, some sexist people, and a lot of other complicated schnitzel. Some of the communication issues are the club's leadership's fault (look at me, being mature and accepting responsibility and schnitzel). To be honest, we did not expect any opposition to publishing information about things we still need to work on in the realm of gender equality. I was shocked that any of the male students said anything openly ridiculing our cause (Just to be clear, I don't mean to blame all the guys at my school with these gross generalizations. Some of them were really supportive. We had two guys on the planning committee for this project). Because we were unprepared to deal with opposition, we did not brief club members on how to handle criticism and sexist jokes, and create eye opening conversations. Even if we had known in advance, it is really hard to teach people to have open minded conversations with people who just offended them. Though initially, the reception of our efforts was a bit disappointing, it only proves that our project was necessary, and it helped us make it into the school newspaper, which is awesome.
