I would like to preface this review by saying I have played RuneScape since 2006, including Old School RuneScape since its inception in 2013. I have spent tens of thousands of hours playing the game outside of Steam, and have enjoyed playing it for a significant portion of my life. In fact, I still enjoy playing. But I cannot in good conscience recommend this game to other players because of Jagex's awful support system.

Yesterday, I created a new account through the Steam Client to complete all the Steam achievements as a low level player. I finished Tutorial Island, and about 5 minutes later I was disconnected from the game, unable to log in, as my account had been disabled. I was informed that my account was likely stolen (wrong, I had created the account less than an hour ago), and that I needed to change the password to be able to log in again. After I changed my password, my account was still disabled. I then checked my account status and found that my account had been given a permanent ban for macroing major. I was not macroing, I never have used bots or macros to play the game, and I never will. There was no further explanation as to why this ban was applied to my account. I appealed the ban, informing Jagex that they had made a mistake. I received word today that the ban would be upheld and that the account would be permanently banned with no further opportunities to appeal.

This is not unlike what a lot of other Old School RuneScape players have had to deal with. For over a decade and a half, Jagex Support has been completely unwilling to implement basic account security, customer service, and in-game quality of life measures that are long overdue. Passwords are not case sensitive, their bot detection software fails to identify thousands of bots, while misidentifying and wrongfully banning legitimate players, and there is NO ONE who can be reached to figure these issues out on a case-by-case basis. Jagex insists on pushing these glaring issues aside in favor of sub-par updates designed to attract new players through Steam and mobile platforms. But I don’t think their flashy new introductory content is going to attract as many players as their horrific support system is going to detract.
