A blast from the past! This is a game I used to play more years ago than I care to admit (gettin' old...) and now it's on Steam! Keep in mind this is a game oroginally from the 90's and the graphics definitely show that, the experience is much closer to Doom(1993) than Doom(2016)...

As a player in this game, called a dreamer, you are entering a shared dream world with other 'dreamers'. There are items to find, quests to complete, spells (arts) to learn, monsters (NightMares) to hunt, and pretty large areas to explore. Sounds kinda like your run of the mill MORPG, right? Well, it takes a pretty hard left Albuquerque.

There are no NPCs. None. No shop keepers to sell items to, no quest givers to spam for experience, no sages or oracles to learn arts from; *almost* everything comes from other dreamers. If you want to learn how to use a new art - you have to find a teacher (they have halos over their heads), if you are looking for experience to strenghten your avatar - look at the quests other dreamers have made on the mission board, if you need an item and you just can't find it - ask another dreamer, if you want to learn how to get somewhere you can't find - ask another dreamer, if you... you get the point.

This leads to one of it's best points; you can become just about anything your dreamer desires, given enough time an effort. Want to become ruler of one of the Great Houses? You can do that. Want to become a teacher and help other dreamers learn the Dream scape? No problem. Want to organize and lead a secret society bent on the destruction and return to chaos of the entire Dream? You go, girl!

This game has a definite focus on the RPG aspect of the MORPG; it is unlike any other game I've ever played. The closest comparison I've ever had is a table-top role-playing game, or perhaps a MUD. Every player is expected to be in-character at all times, but don't worry about it too much - if you come in with some general idea of your character it will find it's legs soon enough!

The GOOD:
  • Excellent role-play
  • Very friendly to the new player
  • Retro graphics and feel (for those of us who remember those days...)
  • Open-ended, player-driven story lines
  • Surprisingly rewarding exploration and combat
The BAD
  • Clunky interface to create your character. Seriously Koi, this cannot be helping new people find the game. Take a look at this video for a walk-through for account/character creation.
  • Dated graphics, if you can't get over those things
  • Server connection issues. If you can't log back in, hop over to their Discord[discord.underlight.com] to request assistance.
  • Somewhat clunky control scheme (it is from the early-mid 90's)

In closing, I highly reccommed if you have an interest in an engrossing roleplay experience, or you are interested in giving it a try! Right now there are a ton of new players and everyone is focussed on making it a great experience for any newbies joining in. Huge thanks to all the dreamers who are spending tons of their time and energy on this!
