Sony recently implemented a divisive requirement for all players of Helldivers 2 to link their PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts, regardless of their original platform of purchase. This policy was not only inconvenient but impractical for many, including myself, as PSN is not accessible in numerous regions. The requirement was met with intense backlash, leading to a drastic drop in the game's positive reviews to a mere 13%.

Adding to the frustration, the linking mandate was enforced months after many had already purchased and started playing the game on Steam. The move felt like a betrayal, forcing players into a corner where they had to either comply or lose access to a product they had already bought. The prospect of being banned from a game for not having a PlayStation account is not just inconvenient; it's outright unacceptable.

As the gaming community expressed their discontent loudly, Sony eventually rescinded the PSN linking requirement. However, they compounded the issue by blocking the sale of Helldivers 2 in nearly 170 countries that lack PSN support. This decision not only affects new buyers but also isolates existing players who are already part of the game's ecosystem.

In the midst of this controversy, Arrowhead, the game's developer, also attracted criticism for what many see as compliance in these anti-consumer practices. Though they later attempted to address the issue with Sony, the initial response was seen as inadequate by the community.

This series of decisions by Sony and Arrowhead highlights a pattern of behavior that is not only anti-developer but also deeply damaging to their relationship with the gaming community. Forcing such restrictions on players after purchase is a disservice, prompting considerations of piracy as a protest against these draconian measures. Personally, I am disillusioned enough to reconsider future purchases from Sony, and I regret not having the option to refund this compromised experience. The industry and its supporters surely deserve better governance and respect than what has been displayed.
