YIIK is a game I was excited for even before it released back in 2019. Something about the visual style reached an itch in my brain that up to that point, no other game had managed to scratch. So, naturally, I bought it for the Switch, downloaded it, played for five minutes before real life intervened, and didn't touch it again until 2023.

I hadn't stayed up to date on what all had happened in the years between. For some reason, people didn't like the game? Whenever YIIK would come up in conversation with other people in my circle they would tell me that it was bad, a waste of my time, etc, and usually never give me any substantive reason beyond any of the sensationalist soundbyte takes all ill-informed people make about YIIK.

I couldn't believe it. Surely, it couldn't be that bad. Not a single one of them had even played the game after all. They'd just watched a video essay or one of numerous AngryVideoGameFunnyMan99 videos on youtube taking the piss out of the game for views. There had to be more to this, right? So I picked up the game and began to play...

Lemme tell ya. Yiik is not a bad game. It was never a bad game. Maybe some aspects of the gameplay of the original release were rough, in particular the battles, but the story - *even* the original cut of the script - is magnificent. What the I.V. update/Nameless Psychosis bring to the table for the game is immense. It makes the battles far more dynamic, and makes the game's story a bit more accessible to the masses. (i.e. people who are illiterate when it comes to interpreting media).

Never in all my years have I encountered a game quite so misunderstood as YIIK - how many games do you know that have a works cited page? Every conceivable complaint has been levied against the work and its devs, most of them completely unjustified, baseless, or misinterpreting the work.

Play the game. Think for yourself. Don't be a stooge.

P.S.:
I like how when you play the tutorial for the new combat system and the song is like "you tryna take my crown??" and little smile spring guy has a crown on and it's like, yes, i am.

Not at all what I expected. Deep without being super dramatic. Think World of Goo, but with flowers instead, sort of.
